Advice for Better Forum Performance -- Try Various Browsers and Clear Cache/history

Forum Boss

Folks -- we have some very smart guys working on the new Forum software.
We know there is some frustration.

I don't know why, but the Forum is responding slow with some browsers, and very fast with others.
There can be many reasons --
- conflict between Forum caching and browser caching
- security systems built-into browser
- server caching and/or slow firewall.

TIP -- Clear the Cache on your browser and see what happens.
For me, with three out of four Windows 10 browsers on a high-speed connection, the Forum was quite fast after clearing cache.

Fast as in loading a thread in 1 second or less.

All I can say is I just accessed the Forum at 5:00pm Pacific with Firefox for Win10 and it was VERY fast. Click on a thread title and the thread usually appeared within 1.5 seconds and sometimes almost instantly.

Then I tried Chrome for Win10 and it was pretty slow. NOW read carefully ...
BUT AFTER I cleared the History and cache. Chrome was fast with threads loading in about 2 seconds.

Then I tried MS Edge -- still good, but a little slower.
But again FASTER after I cleared the cache.
I think what may be happening is that the browsers are possibly looking for old stuff.

Finally I tried BRAVE, which was my default browser before (because it has minimal tracking)
It was now the slowest of the four.

Of course YMMV. But this indicates there may be some caching issues with this new software.

We just found something important. There is a table of our 52,300 users. It appears that was "damaged in transit". We used a tool to rebuild the user cache and speed seems to be substantially better.

Guys, this is why I asked you all to be patient. This is one of probably 800 potential faults in the database.

im using safari and it wouldn't work at all earlier. it is dang fast right now. like click and its loaded fast. great job and most will not complain. the ones who do dont need an opinion anyway, they will be assigned one :)

I tried clearing all history last night, and even tried a different browser. No joy. Whatever you did overnight must've done the trick, it's blazing fast now on both chrome and Firefox. Appreciate the headache you went through, looks like it's paying off!

Seems to be working well for me too:

Mac OS 10.11.6 & Firefox 78.3.1 esr

Thanks very much for all your work on this!

Clearing the cache on FireFox 81.0.1 totally resolved the issue. You told us there would be some bumps in the road and a learning curve..

I have a suggestion . If a member post in a thread , instead of having them go back to the top of the page and click follow thread . How about automatically initiating the follow thread criteria if a member post in that thread .

It seems odd to me that if I post in a thread that it isn’t obvious that I’m interested in following it . The way the system is now it’s like walking into a circle of people in the middle of a conversation , interrupting them Then walking off not caring what they have to say or if they cared what I had to say . It would seem reasonable that if I interjected myself into a conversation that I obviously want to continue in that conversation .

Just a thiught
Thank MG .

I couldn’t get threads to load on my iPad using Safari last night even after clearing the cache. This morning it’s blazing fast!!!

I'm running Win 10 with chrome, and had trouble yesterday with threads not opening, etc., I deleted the temp cache and restarted my laptop about 3 times, seems to be working like before. Had to do something similar on another forum when they changed to a new/different platform.

Thanks for all the hard work you guys do. :)

Was very slow for me last night in two browsers in my phone but is now lightning fast this morning.

I like the new look!

That's set in your preferences.

Using Safari on an iPhone 8+ was hit or miss until today. I figured it would take time just to transfer or load all of the info/files to the new program. Now all is resolved. Ver fast.

Some people are so impatient. Even when you tell them in advance, some still expect fast food drive through service.

Great job FB.

Back up to speed now. Thanks Great job. Switching browsers not an option for me. I use Brave browser, I am no longer part of the great Google empire info harvesting rip off.

Forum Boss: We use Brave browser now for most browsing. On some sites it doesn't work optimally, but generally it works well. Google is scary with all the data harvesting. FWIW, we have never given any information on Forum users to any third party. And you'll notice we don't send out newsletters.

Cleared my browsing history and got notice that some of my passwords had been compromised, including at Paypal. HOLY SH*T !!

Now have to update a bunch.

Thanks, Boss, this opened my eyes to possible fraud vectors and now making some badly needed security changes.
