Adjustable stock ??

For those of you that shoot FT/R with adjustable stocks. Once you have your cheek and buttplate adjusted, do you ever change them?

I am making my own stock and have it finished except the cheek area and buttpad. Thinking of making a snap on/off cheekpiece using magnets and a simple raised buttplate. Since I can still sand and fit, why not "make it fit" instead of adjustable. Save some weight on hardware as well.

I still have some work in the grip area and still have to mill the vent slots in the front.

Do the high cheek pieces have to be removed to clean the rifle or remove the bolt from the action?

Usually they do. But for cleaning rods deffinitely...

Usually they leave them alone once they have them set to fit.
So making one that fits you and is not adjustable would be fine as long as you can clean it without a problem..

The beauty of an adjustable stock is that you can change it to match the conditions. I have shot in 110 degree weather with only a tee shirt on and in 40 degree weather with a coat and vest on. The adjustable butt really helps me. If I am not comfortable behind the rifle my scores suffer. I like a firm cheek weld so being able to adjust the cheek piece is a necessity. My first adjustable stock was built by Alex Sitman at Masterclass. It is a work of art and can be adjusted to not only fit me but others if I want to lend my rifle or teach someone about F-Class. The other thing I found out when I got my first adjustable stock is that I get more comfortable with the butt plate canted a little. I never would have known without the option. The only negatives are weight and of course additional cost.

Gonzo, the tshirt vs jacket makes great sense. I will go ahead and order the hardware. I have one rifle with adjustable butt and I only seem to cant it if I am wearing a heavyjacket.


I allready had the vent holes drilled when someone pointed out they may weaken the fore end. I left the rib kinda high for that reason and I liked the look..

That stock you made looks good to me.I wish I had that kind of talent.How does it feel in the bags?What kind of scope is that out of curiosity?

The scope is an old Tasco World Class 10-40 that I have had for years. I put it on for all the mocking up in the stock. It has actually been a VERY reliable scope.

Not had it in the bags yet because I dont have the Bag yet!! Going to use a Gator with 3/4" wide ear and a Centershot front bipod. I am holding off on ordering the Nightforce till I can hear some reviews on their new comp model.

Starting to get excited about shooting this one!
