Action suggestion

I'm looking to assemble a custom rigand thought that the gurus here could offer advice.
Here's the parameters:
Short Action
Rem 700 footprint
Right hand
HS Precision tactical stock
To be used for long range varminting

Should I go with a 700 action and have it accurized? Or would it be more cost effective to get a custom action?

I think id look at the lawton 7500 competition actions that are just a tad larger in diam than a remington.

No, this just makes a $350 to $400 action worth $250 to $350 depending on who does the work. You'll be much happier just buying a custom action.

Varminting from a bipod I guess?

Does it need to be a repeater?

Just to suggest an alternative: Borden Alpine or SSR depending on whether you want a repeater or single-shot and how much you're willing to spend.

All the suggestions are good. Pick the one you like the best. You won't be disappointed with any of them.

Here is another good one. http://www.pierceengineeringltd.com/products.html Almost all of the Rem footprint customs are great products, it is just a matter of which one you like best.

It might or it might not. The point is that for about the same money spent, you wind up with something that is worth less than when you started.

I have also found through using a few different smiths to true up actions that there are different opinions as to what constitutes truing up or blue printing an action. To some people just squaring up the receiver face, re-cutting threads, lapping the lugs and surface grinding a recoil lug fits their description and others go much farther. I am of the opinion that if you are going to build a non-competition rifle and you already own an action go ahead and have it trued up by a bench rest smith but if you are starting from scratch, don't own an action) you will be better off buying a custom because you can have it the way you want it, ie: trigger, bolt release, magazine configuration and so on.

While all of the expensive custom actions should be dead solid perfect when you buy them they are not. Most are, but all are not. I agree with aixenmemphis that if you have a Remington action and are happy with it, go ahead and have it trued up and enjoy some very precise shooting with it. With the way customs are going up in price you can have the Remington trued up and still have a few hundred dollars left over, depending on which custom you compare to. Also if you're looking for a varminter then you may want a magazine.
