I recall someone else doing action screw torque testing on a Savage rifle. He concluded that 60 in/lb on the front screw and 25 in/lb on the back was optimal. He also said tighten the front first

I’ve tried by I can’t get my GoPro to narrow the angle in video format. I have a very old GoPro. I do want to get a new one that can narrow the view though so it’s on the list.

I watched the video, and had read the article about the guy torquing down the Savage. I have a new Bartlien 300 WSM barrel that I was doing seating depth testing on. So I loosened the screws and tightened the front to 60 and the rear to 25. I only had a single bad group at the shortest seating depth. The first group only had two shots as I messed up and seated one too deep. But wow I was impressed.

I've put it in a McMillan stock. 3 pillars, not bedded. I'm at 30 for screw torque.
Getting groups of .350 consistently.

Will going as high as 60 on torque damage the pillars or stock?

How about stocks with an aluminum bedding block? I have several.

I highly doubt it. I’m at 65 on my pillar bedded Mac and have been for years with no observable damage.

How about stocks with an aluminum bedding block? I have several.

I have not tested one of those so sorry I cannot say. Perhaps try shooting a few 5-shot groups at various setting to see if there is a sweet spot. If you do, please report back here so we can see the results.

My Savage "target" action (6 Dasher) is in a McRee chassis. I tighten both screws to 60 inch pounds - works great!
