I have bedded a few actions years ago. these were all wood stocks. I now need to bed an hs precision stock with an aluminum bedding block.so here are a few questions. is there anything special I need to do to prep the bedding block itself? about how much material should I remove? I believe I have removed to much in the past. what do you guys recommend for bedding compound? I would kike to use devcon10110 or probed 2000. from what I have read both of these tend to stay where you put it and or not runny like the products I have used in the past. about how much should I purchase as I will probably only do this one rifle. I would rather have to much then not enough. do you recommend letting the rifle sit upright or clamping the barrel in a vise upside down? sorry for all the questions but I can't seem to find the answers I'm looking for in the videos I've watched. this is a Remington 700 with no pillars. I know I will get some good answers from you guys. thanks dave

1- for prep I like to drill some small holes threw out the block to help the epoxy have something to holed on to good.
2- my self I like to remove a good .050 thou of material on the block then behind the recoil lug I remove a good .100 thou. Really not that critical just remove some material
3- devcon and kiwi neutral shoe polish are great. The 10110 is a one pound kit and as small as you can get. That's good for a few rifles
4- I let mine cure setting in a gun cradle up right.

Your stock has pillars by the mean of the bedding block.

I start by taking a cleanup/truing cut along the bedding block, to make sure it's straight...they aren't always perfect. Then rough it and drill a few holes or otherwise to assure a good mechanical bond. I also remove around .100 behind the lug and deeper on the sides, behind the lug to give the epoxy some "body". I use Devcon on most. Never had a problem.

thank you gentleman for your replies. I appreciate your time to answer my questions. I believe this will make this a much easier project. dave

Dave the great thing about bedding is if it don't turn out perfect you just mill it out and redo it tell it is. Sometimes they all don't come out totally stress free the first time. Get some 1/4 28 bolts that are long and cut the heads off them. To use as alignment for your action to stock.

Hi Dave,hi all
Dave,go check Nathan Foster's site " ballistic studies",you will get all the info you inquired upon for your bedding job;this bloke specialises on bedding rifles, accurising them, studying every single cartridge that's been made, hunt guiding, you name it...He's pretty good at it,just give it a go,you'll find what you're looking for,I'm sure.

Keep in mind that any time raw aluminum sits around for any period of time, it will start to oxidize which will hurt the bedding compound getting a good bond to the aluminum. Even if you don't remove material, lightly sand it & use a cleaner on it.
