Ackley Improved reamer

Is it possible to run an Ackley Improved reamer, by hand, through your action and ream your chamber without removing the barrel from the action? Then, fireform your brass...

You really should remove the barrel and set it back at least a couple of threads.

I cut my dasher chamber by hand... it was a 6BR chamber to start.

I believe cutting an ackley chamber (with the parent cartridge as the starting point) would be about the same thing.

It's very doable, as long as you have a couple of things figured out:
1) Original chamber is cut properly and true to the bore
2) proper fitting pilot on the reamer
3) Some sort of adjustable reamer stop (so you know how far you've gone)
4) headspace gauges
5) patience

I'm not sure how this could be done without pulling the barrel.
Pull it off, cut it by hand, and thread it back on.

Your chamber will be too long, the barrel needs to come off and be shortened by a thread or two depending upon the caliber.

Only if you have to fireform factory loaded ammo.

Yes, you could do it without shortening the threads/shoulder but then you have a rifle that needs custom brass and unless you can live forever, someone else will own it & try to fire factory in it. Doing it right the 1st time is normally the best policy in the long run.

I suppose you realize you can create just as much "extra"headspace by improperly resizing brass?
