Accurate Shooter Frankengun...

The classifieds here are a treasure trove for those of us on a limited budget. It's the equivalent of a national yard sale.

Example: I have wanted one of Gary Eliseo's (Competition Machine) Tube Guns for years. This late spring a member had a used RTM listed here for about half the cost of a new one. A month or so later, another member listed a low mileage Remington factory 26" barrel 300 Win Mag for a hundred dollars. In early October ChiroDoc1 had a (new) 700 LA with a mag bolt face for $325.

Another member had 350 Federal GMM once-fired cases for sale, Tumbled, FL sized, trimmed to length, fifty cents apiece. Yes, I bought them all. All factory ammunition from one lot. Same day, I found a set of Wilson dies for the 300 for another hundred-dollar bill.

I take the pieces and parts to my local gunsmith at Sure Shot Precision in Boise. Due to the Remington tolerances, when we screwed the barrel onto the receiver, the Eliseo washer gave us thirteen and one half thousands of an inch excessive headspace. Not Good!

I called Gary and asked him how much to regrind the washer and stick this package together. With the work he did, and return UPS shipping and insurance it was less than $200 to my house. It got here yesterday in the early afternoon. Safe and sound.

In an initially unrelated deal in May, I was able to buy a Viper HS-T, VHS-4310 6-24 x 50 with the VMR-1 (mrad) reticle for $350 here.

We had an slightly overcast day today, and about noon it got up to 43-degrees. I had loaded half a box of shells with the Sierra 190gr MK with about 74gr of MRP. Mounted the scope and bore sighted it. Four rounds and it was zeroed 2" high. It chrono'ed 2983fps, and after adjusting the scope at 100yds the last six rounds went in .622". There is some work left to do as far as seating depth, but I am a very happy camper.

To me, this is a great example of what can be done here on a budget. Less the scope, and brass, dies, and bullets (which I had sitting on a shelf the last ten years) I have about eleven hundred and fifty dollars tied up in the rifle.

I did not keep the receipts, or the names, unfortunately; but I would like to thank all of you who helped me out.

Nicely done. I'm a scrounging deal seeker too! I see guns posted for $5000 and roll my eyes. Now, I'll admit that I have a couple $3000 guns but most of mine are "deals" that I waited for in the classifieds or parts found on Gunbroker.

My 260AI was pieced together a similar way. Bought a barreled action with jewell trigger on here, 40xb stock and Leupold 15moa base on eBay, dies, and scope from other members here. Brass was from a Facebook group. First 3 rounds out of the gun measured 0.156" at 100 yards! I havent even bedded it yet!

I've got about 2K into mine, and it's proven itself very well!
