Help a new shooter out

Hello guys and gals. first of all, I appologize if I am posting in the wrong forum, but this is where I landed. I am in the process of building a new 6br. I had a Savage LRPV in .223 that I had rebarrelled with a Shillen select match barrel chambered in 6mmbr. That being said, I am having trouble deciding what scope to put on top of her. I am leaning hard towards the Bushnell Elite 4200, but am afraid that I will run out of adjustment at longer ranges. (600 yd.s and out). Do I pay the extra money for a Night Force? I would really like to be in the 5-6 hundred range. Its hard for me to imagine that every shooter out there has got the money to spend on a NF. What do you guys use? Thanks alot, Gavin

You don't need the NF by any means. All you need are Burris Signature Zee rings and a few sets of offset inserts to add or subtract elevation from the scope. It's like a 20MOA base but better, as you can add less or more elevation if needed.

I use them and they are awesome, never leave a mark on your scope either. They are not a ton of money either.

welcome. First of all we need to know what type of shooting your going to be doing. You said 600 yards but is that 600 yard bench rest or 600 yards live varmint shooting? All these details really make a difference. If i had to go with a blind recommendation from what i just read i would have to suggest a sightron 8-36 or a 10-50. probably the 36x. Nothing wrong with a Bushnell either. it should get you to 600 without any problems. If you have any problems use a 20moa scope rail or mount of some sort for the extra moa. Its built Right into the mount! I would have to pass you on the NF. Unless your a serious competitor i see no need for it. They are nice no question. but save a little money and buy ammo or supplies! Lee

Gavin,
Welcome to 6br, this is a awesome site and I am sure you will enjoy it, I know I have.
I personally like the top end scopes but I have heard good things about the elite line of bushnell scopes. I also prefer the picitinny style bases Badger,or Ken Farrell is what I usually buy, you can get it in a 20 moa and I would think you could easily go to 1K yds.
I used to like the Burris rings Kenny mentioned and they are good rings but I like the kind I mentioned because I cant afford 50 or so $3000 scopes But I can afford a few good scopes and move them in seconds to any of my rifles I want and am usually on paper the first shot. If you only have one rifle and don't plan on any more or don't plan on swapping scopes around then the burris will be fine.Good Luck
Wayne.

Thanks for the speedy responses. Skeet, to answer your question, I probably will not be involved in any serious copitition, mainly just a few buddies shooting on the weekends. But you know, that can turn serious real quick. I just didnt want to spend 500 dollars for a scope that will not work for my purposes, and have to turn around and spend an additional 1000-1500 for a scope that will work. Thanks again. Gavin

The Bushnell and the Burris rings, with the offset inserts, should be just fine, and represent real values. A couple of things that are often left off of non competition shooters' equipment lists are a barrel mounted mirage shield, and some way to see what the wind is doing, at different distances downrange.

Boyd has brought up a few good points. Wind flags are very important, especially as ranges stretch beyond 300yds. You can use surveyors tape or even a child's pin-wheel to get an idea of wind speed and direction.

I use a few small stands I made that has a pin-wheel, mounted so it is free to turn in any direction, which has blades painted in alternating colors and also has a rudder behind it to help it turn into the wind. They also have a couple feet of surveyor's tape hanging from them as well. Nothing fancy, but it seems to work well enough.

Buzzard, what kind of power are you looking for? The bushnell elites are great<i have several and love them. Let us know the power range you need and someone here probably has one they can sell to you right. And by the way welcome to the premier gun site on the internet.

Jon, That brings up so many other issues. Myself, I cant imagine going any less than 24x. Probably closer to 36x. But, when you talk to other people, they say that you dont need more than 14x. I just cant imagine, but then again, I am the rookie.
