Accuracy king of the small cals?

Curious if there is a general consensus on which small/varmint cartridge is known for easy accuracy. I know the 6ppc is notorious, as well as BR/Dasher family for bench rest. In the 20-22 caliber range what would you build for an absolute eyeball puncher? 222rem had a good run, Vartarg seems pretty popular here, 22ppc?
Lots of variables I know but, look forward to hearing opinions. I don’t have much experience in this realm yet.

Your intended shot distance may play in. I am a fan of the 20 Vartarg & 17 Fireball inside of 300 yards. Though the 222 & 221 FB deserve consideration as well. Nothing wrong with a good 223 either. Well, the list goes on.

A few rimfire are worth mentioning as well. 17 Hornet & 17 mach 2 could fit the bill for smaller stuff for distances up to 150 yards in rather easy fashion

22 waldog, way up on my list. @Mulligan, worth it?
Nickels worth of difference between the two of them. Dan Dowling did the first Waldog in 1982, and I had the first .100 short 22 PPC the following year. I had a slightly slower lot of H-322 than was common around that time, so my logic was to leave the case .025 longer for that powder. At least that was the idea, in practical application, it didn't make the slightest difference. I remember people getting an odd look on their face when they saw those two cartridges on the equipment list. Each of them could win in the right gun.

The WalDog is the most accurate short range group cartridge I have ever shot.

By the way, there is only about .007” difference between the original WalDog and the 100 short.

Dan pushed the shoulders back .125 but then blew out the russian shoulder to 30 degrees. So it ended up .107” short.

I’ve shot both, it’s 6’s.

A snooter full of LT -32, LT-30, N-130, Ball-c, even the blc-2 works.
Old lots of 748, work also.

2019 lot of 133 was killer in the WalDog.

It’s just not that picky.

Waldog,22 ppc too slow for 300 yard wet work on small critters.
A WalDog, I’m my rifles, has no issue running a touch over 3500 with a 52gr Bib.
If I step on it, 3700. N530 will light a fire!
Of course, if you don’t mind a slow pour and a long drop tube, n-133 will get you more that that!
Although I have never shot it past 200 yards, I would expect to would keep up with most ppc’s just fine at 300 when loaded for the task.

I have not seen a 22BR that will not at least shoot .2's or better
Always shoots even better if you put some load development time in
Once you find a load, a 22BR almost always just shoots accurately without even trying hard
just point and pull trigger - Hit
I couldn't agree more!

I put this .22BR together from parts I had laying around. Panda action, Lee six stock in terrible shape, and a Jewell trigger. I bought the barrel off ebay! Picture is of the first few shots.

Just out of curiosity, target or varmint? Max range?

I have a XP100 action glued in and a new Hart 24" barrel in 222Rem and now have 589 on the clock . Been seating the bullets into the rifling and this gun don't like that so I jumped it .006 this time and what an improvement . All the info is on the target . Todays target 4/2/2025 smallest 3 shot target was .103 .

Any of the above. Just wanted to hear conversation about accurate small cartridges. See if there were any standouts that I might have overlooked. For me personally I’m interested in building's hunting style rifles for carrying afield. Ground squirrels, coyotes, rabbits, pigs, deer, paper, steel. I like super accurate, easy to load guns. Looks like I’ll be building a 22arc on a cz527. Down the road I’d like to build something like a vartarg or 20practical on a Sako mini action.

For me anything smaller than a 22Cal is a pain to clean . I have 17 Mach 4 but don't shoot it much because the barrels are harder to clean , and that is just me .

I’d look at a 22-250AI with an 8 or 9 twist, it would make a good multi use rifle.

I did this w a sako l461. Had a badly rusted 222 barrel on it when i got it. Lilja 3gr 11tw 20-222 now. Perfection in a little walking rifle. Feeds perfectly. If you built one you would absolutely love it. Guaranteed
