Accuracy from 223?

Stinette and Manitou-
Outstandind groups. I have a Bartlein 1:7.7 twist that I am about to have chambered. I want to shoot bullets in the 69 grain range up to the 80 SMK. What chamber/reamer are you using? Any suggestion on how much freebore works best for the heavy bullets.
Thanks
Phil G

Hello there. My reamer is a Pacific Tool and gauge reamer. The neck diameter is .252" for no turn necks and the free bore is .064". Its perfect for 53 grain Vmax up to 80 grain Sierra Matchkings. If you ONLY plan on shooting the 69 grain bullets and up I would go with a .080 free bore. Good luck on your build!

Stinette-
Thanksvery much for the reply and info. One last question - what is the OAL for the 80 Sierra MatchKing with your .064 freebore?
Thanks again
Phil G

Stinnett,

How much case capacity is chewed up with the 53 Vmax using the .064 free bore???

Thanks,
A different Phil....

My COAL with the 80g SMK's is 2.500" and my COAL with the 53g Vmax is 2.375". The 53g Vmax leaves lots of case capacity. The 80g SMK's fits just perfect.

Lazer, nice looking rifle and from your targets it shoots as good as it looks!

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. What is the barrel length and contour as well as who fluted it. Very cool.

My rifle has only a 0.025" freebore. What bullet weights should that limit me too, or would shooting the 80 SMKs just require a different powder? I was told that 55 grain and 77 grain bullets should work the best, but thought that I would ask for more opinions from this forum. Thanks

Thanks GSTaylorg....Makes me feel better....I got some H322 and Bergers based on your earlier response, but also saw your post about the 0.061 freebore gun, and had some reservations about my freebore. I will proceed with working up to the 22.5 grain load.

Merry Christmas!

GSTAYLORG.........worked up your "recipe" for the H322, 80.5 Bergers, and 0.025" freebore. Turns out that the 22.5 grains gave me an avg of ~2860 fps, although my ES was 80, so have to work on that. Attached are targets at 300 yards with two different lots of brass....not much difference between the 16 and 20 thou jump, as yet. The lesser charges were OK....haven't tried any higher speeds, but may not need to. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR SHARING THE INFO!
