Accuracy advantage w/bipod skis

6.5 forever

Silver $$ Contributor
There is a active thread on shooting pinned or free recoil. I'm using the Accuracy HD 50 bipod. I'm currently testing the ski feet (free recoil) vs the rubber feet. Both on a very short rug on top of a cement bench.

Anyone have thoughts or experience with these?

Outside of maybe a 22lr something has to give upon recoil. Loading the Harris to some degree is popular to take out the slack in the mechanism, which subsequently rotated upon recoil. You need to experiment to find what works best for you.

I have limited experience with shooting a bipod off the bench with centerfire cartridges. But what I did discover is that I obtained more consistent shot placement with a piece of carpet having soft heavy nap as the base. The Harris bipod feet tended to "dig in" with some shoulder pressure forward creating a stable base.

Also, the carpet was long enough so both the bipod and the rear rest were located on the carpet thus preventing it from sliding forward under the application of shoulder pressure to the stock.

As stated in post #2, you will have to experiment to find the best system for you. In my case, our range also had a hard concrete bench surface which would cause the bipod to jump under recoil with cartridges such as the 243 Win and 308 Win. The carpet mitigated that problem.
