Acceptable neck thickness variation?

I thought i would never say this but the Pumpkin is the easiest and most repeatable neck turner i have. The others are very accurate and it is a PITA. to get them set....... With the mic. you need to develop a feel and don't look at the numbers doing it. Brass is soft and it is very easy to get different readings....... jim
Jim I just bought a 21st Century and I really like it. I believe it to be one of the easiest to adjust. I have had Hart, more then one model Sinclair and a bunch of K&M's. It seems to be well made and cuts really good. Matt

NO, you are missing the point. The expander mandrel is used to make a good fit for the neck turner only, one maker expander mandrel sure doesn't work for an others neck turner. i do not ever expand the neck to get the proper neck tension, that is done with a neck bushing from the outside... it is just an other chance for miss alignment ..... jim
Jim, you may be missing my point. I was not referring to neck expansion for turning purposes. Neck tension can be controlled by expansion if one chooses to do so. That is what the poster appeared to be inquiring, but I may be mistaken. I will not argue the merits of controlling NT with mandrel expansion but I have seen some outstanding results of competitors who do so.

Matt you are right but it like the rest use theads and then you have back lash. The Pumpkin has no threads so no backlash. no guess work .......... jim

You are right on that guys around here have been doing that for a lot of years. I never found it necessary to use that step, getting to far along to change. I like simple, the less i fool with it the better, i get very good results the way i do it and i guess you do also, so there is more than one way to skin a cat....... jim
