A Thank You... Veterans Day

There are approximately 20 million veterans in the United States today.
I'd like to think each one is thanked for his or her service on this day.
I wish there was a way to be sure.

Thanks to all, and, even though it was targeting Viet Nam Era veterans, in the words of the Statler Brothers song: You are not just a name on the wall. You all are/were sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, fathers, mothers....and above all, heroes to a grateful nation. We salute you. God bless you all.

I am taken aback by the thank yous I receive now. It was 180 degrees different in 1965. I know, well I think I know, these aren’t the same people that I ran into back then. I hope they are six feet under, really. But on the positive side, that wasn’t you and so thank you for thinking now and thank you to my brothers and sisters who also served and who are serving now. There are a lot of unseen scars on my generation and on the youth of today.

It is the Soldier, not the minister, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Thanks to the millions who have served our country since its founding.
