A talk with my Dad

Great job on the weight loss Brad.

My Dad died when I was 7, I'm almost 69 now, I lived a lot like your dad, hard, poor live. Now I've retired 3 times and enjoying it. I retired from the Army in 1987 and I'm almost at my max Army weight.

I go by one saying, "I don't live to eat, I eat to live". Three times a day (unless I'm on a prairie dog town) with my main meal at 17:00 ( 5:00 to the civilians out there). A little of everything with a lot of moderation.

Brad,
Aside from some incredible weight loss I am more envious that you have such a good relationship with your dad. Like they say, everyone has a father but not everyone has a dad. Count your blessings that you have both. Thanks for an uplifting post.

The last year my Dad coached basketball, he set a record for technical fouls and game ejections...

I told him, well being single now, I guess I am making a choice between food and attractive women. Food never stood a chance...

He said, "Well you are John Walker's son..."

About the only thing good about all the unnatural things in today's food is it makes breasts grow larger. [ hopefully on women ]

LOL

Guys, Thanks for all the inspiration. I'm 6'8" pushing 265 lbs. I'll be 71 this year & just started a work-out program at a local gym. It's KILLING me since I've only been at it for 2 wks. You've all given me the incentive to hit it again tomorrow morning. I REALLY needed that :) Itty bitty groups to all, Dale

It aint the food, it's the work.

My dad and I farmed full time for years. We scooped silage into troughs, hauled hay, and on and on. To someone who has not lived that life, I can't even begin to explain it.

We ate two to three times per meal what I do now, and didn't gain an ounce.

My dad cut wood, built fence and checked the cows till 18 days before he died. And he never really gained much weight.

I dont think it's the food. They didn't eat a lot of processed food, but bacon, sausage and eggs for breakfast, Steak, roast, pork chops and mashed taters.

I was 17 years old before I drank "store" milk. I wouldn't even drink the milk they tried to give us in our school lunch.

The old timers didn't have the massive quantities of food either. Not with 6 or 7 kids in the family.

We also ate a lot of wild game. probably once a week.

I was a kid in the 50's and 60's, but was fed by folks that grew up farming during the depression. That hasn't happened for a long time now.

Work exercise is great, if that's what you do for work, but... I'm 61. I tore up my right shoulder 2 years ago and it's not fixable. Then my hips went out, needing replacements, which I'm half way through. Besides this, I don't have a lot of time to exercise due to work and a long commute. I work a desk job and have for 40 years. Last year, some folks in the break room started talking about "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. My wife and I read it. She took it to heart and started cooking differently. Now we eat mostly soups for dinner with a lot of good stuff like quinoa and kale. We do eat a little meat and cheese, which Dr. Fuhrman doesn't care for. However, we have steadily lost weight. I have lost about 30 pounds and have only about 17 to go to get back to college weight. We treat ourselves some, but in general, food is what we put in our faces to keep our bodies alive. If you eat the right stuff, you don't have to worry too much about how much you eat. If you start missing fatty stuff, go buy another gun and try to forget about it.
