New to this website, in hopes of getting some experience & opinion on a project I am working on. I have done around 20 barrel liners - mostly single shots, a levergun and a pump. I have a shot-out Spanish Mauser that I want to convert to 30-30 by lining the barrel, which is my first bolt action project. I made alterations to the extractor and bolt face rim, and the action cycles acceptably including magazine feed up to four rounds. My question is: In order to use the original recessed bolt face and extractor configuration, when chambered and headspaced the cartridge will not fully enter the chamber to the rim. This will leave about .116" of the cartridge base exposed. Since this is about the thickness of a large rifle primer, I believe this means the entire exposed portion of the cartridge will be comprised of the web portion of the cartridge, which should handle the pressure. As such, when I cut the chamber I will be headspacing off of the cartridge shoulder, not the rim. Seems like it should work.
Am I thinking correctly (other than starting a economically silly project like this). Safety issues I may not be considering? Your thoughts and experience are appreciated.
