A question about lowers on AR's

I don't have along history on auto's here. but what were the going prices for lowers before the boom a few weeks ago? I mean a basic lower, without anything attached. no handles, buttstocks, springs, etc. just that small piece with the serial # on it???? I guess by reading this you know how little experience I have with them.....

Depending on maker and where you bought it anywhere from $90 to $250....

Today they are selling between $250 and $700 on Gun Broker, my local shop has a few on hand and has to sell them out of State, not sure what the prices are.

The one I was looking at is an Anderson arms. it was priced at $250. I thought that the lower didn't matter as much as having a really good upper as far as shooting well. not sure I am willing to pay that knowing it might be forever before I can get or afford a really good quality upper that will shoot to suit me. I think I would be better off at this point spending the $$$ on a custom bolt action, then I could buy a barrel, stock, etc, and have it smithed cheaper than the AR's are going for????? there I go again, spending $$$ before I have it....

Maybe I will just get a scope instead, I need 3 as it is. not much point of getting a lower that will just sit there for months. of course fienstien introduced her bill today. I don't think it will get anywhere, thou. thanks for all the help and answers guys. helped make up my mind quickly.

That bill is DOA.....

Do yourself a favor and go to GunBroker and see directly for yourself via using their advanced search. You can see the price differences before and after Obama Reelection and the December 14th Sandy Hook shooting by going to the last page of the search results. I know that you don't have to be a member to use the search, but I'm not sure if the "advanced" search feature requires it.

And just so you may know what receiver you are buying, you might want to give this a quick look too;

To me, a tight fit between upper and lower is more important to me then anything else. (that is....as long as I'm not planning on using the rifle for battle.) Some upper to lower fits are horrible. Don't think that you can order or buy a receiver half and all will be just fine. I made the mistake of buying a top rated LMT complete lower at a gunshow (with sopmod collapsible stock and 2-stage trigger group) and haven't yet found an upper it will fit firmly onto. The factory has refused to help with selling me an LMT upper that will fit it. Since that lesson, I now only buy the whole TIGHT rifle and just sell off what I don't want.

You could use a jp entreprises taper pin for the rear hole and when tightened correctly it will make your sloppy fit all but disappear.

Yep, folks can also use that little $5 red rubber thingy that fits inside between the two receiver halves.

That's still not as tight as an interference fit between the lower and upper. The only real fix is bedding.

Yes, bed the upper and lower with the wedge holding it in position: if it bothers you that much. It's easy: even I can do it. :-)
