New guy with a question right out of the gate on a rest

New guy here. Been lurking for awhile trying to soak up as much as possible without jumping in and asking stupid questions that have been asked over and over. But, I have a question that I can't seem to get answered. I am currently looking for a rest. was initially gonna buy like a cheapy Caldwell and see what I like or dislike about it. But searching another forum I am on in the classifieds, I run across what looks to be a very well constructed rest for sale. But the seller has no idea who really made it. Not that brand is of super importance, but it's a lot of money to me to throw down on some unknown rest. I am hoping this is something I can grow into. It has all the elevation and windage stuff and some homemade, wobbly looking, legs along with some Sinclair items to go with it. But I don't think the rest itself is a Sinclair. He is asking $400 for it and I am trying to figure out if it is as good a deal as it seems to be. It is supposed to be Stainless Steel as he says it weighs 30+ pounds. Anyone have any ideas who makes it? $400 seem as attractive as it looks?

For $100 more, there's currently a sinclair competition rest with front bag in the classifieds. I have one and am very happy with it.

The rest looks like it was fabricated. It could weigh as much as stated. It is hard to tell the actual footprint size. I have one much like it that I made but I think mine weighs around 20#. The jack screws look to be 3/8" which is standard I think so a Sinclair speed screw might work on it. It needs a Shadetree top and it would be GTG. Cannot comment on it's worth.

IMHO, it looks like a decently made rest. with the Sinclair legs and speed-screw and what looks like a variation of super-feet, I think $400 is a fair price. The only advantage the Bald Eagle rest has over the rest pictured is it does not have the B-E's rack and pinion rise to achieve quick rough vertical adjustment....on this custom made rest you either get rough vertical adustment with the mariner wheel only or perhaps the large locking knob controls a separate collar that you manually lift up and lock in - ala the Hart or Caldwell.

The top is a Ron Hoehn and it is just fine. I don't think he makes them any more but they are excellent windage adjustable tops. They have a clear plastic sheet inside on the parts that slide that needs to be in place so the tolerances are right.

Ron hone is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet

The 2 rests I had in this type of configuration the screws on the side would not hold the top against the gun as they would loosen up.
I sold them both for half price and moved on

YMMV. Nice stuff but the design does not hold up well over time. Jeff

Looks a lot like my bald eagle after we did the windage mod. Top that is. The sinclair speed screw is worth about 70.00 to 80.00 new. My opinion, yep the $400 price mark is probably good. The round feet rests are probably in the 25.00 range or so, though I made my own with washers and JB weld with rubber washer bottoms. So at least 100.00 or so in just the two items.

Not sure what kind of competition you may do if any but the rests with a co axial capability of adjustment by way of a joy stick are what I would say are the newer technology as the one you are looking at is older tech. Either work well but of course the older requires more work as to making any adjustments.
