A preferred reticle?

With the scopes you folks are using, is there a preference for the
reticle of choice? Yes, such a decision is most often user desired,
but what reticles do you use? Mil-dot; 1/4' dot; 1/2' dot; duplex; or?

I'm figuring on a 6.24x or an 8-32x power range, 30mm tube most likely.
Will be using the 6mmBR, 1-12' twist, 75-80 gr and lighter bullets.

General usage will be in prairie dog n' ground squirrel harvesting in
the 300-500 yard range, well hopefully!), field use.

Would just like to hear what folks tend to lean towards with their
choice of reticle, and maybe why that choice?

thanks all for your time with my inquiry,
regards, outsidebear

I prefer a mildot. I click for elevation and hold off for windage. I have tried other reticles shooting prairie dogs but did not like not being able to hold for windage.

Hands down, the Leupold 'varmint hunter' in a 6.5-20 by 40mm if you are varmint hunting. I prefer the 30 mm tubes without the target turrets. With this reticle you do not need to mess with turning turrets in the field.

I own several Generation III Government model Mil-Dot Springfields, two LR Leupolds with target dots and two new Sightron SIII 8-32X56 with target dot. The SIII are by far the best scopes I own. I like them so much that I've placed a order for one of the new SIII 10-50X56 soon to be released for sale sometime in October. Over the past seven years and several trip to the dog towns I've found that clicking is by far the most accurate means to consistent long range accuracy holding off just don't work out past 500yds and the small target dot will not completely blot out a prairie dog at 1000yds. There no substitute for knowing the exact range and verified ballistics of the round your shooting. Tape a ballistic cheat sheet to your rifle stock, range your targets click the turrets, put the dot on p-dog and watch for the red mist.

RJ

I like the dot on my 8x32 Sightron, and the double dots on my Nightforces are also a plus.. My big Leicas solve the ranging problem cause I don't like holding off at a distance....

my favorite is the MP8 retical of my IOR! with the center dot, you can disect a 30 caliber hole at 100 yds

I have 2 prairie dog rigs right now. The 1st one is an XP-100 handgun 17 Fireball. I'm getting 3400 mv out of the 25 Horn. HP. The optic that's on that 1 is the 6-18x Nikon Buckmasters MD reticle. I use it at the optic's highest power where the MD becomes 2.4 IPHY between dots and basically a 1/2' dot. I also use turret for elevation and reticle for windage with this rig and have made some 1st-shot connections out to ~500 yds. in 10 mph and less winds.

My other rig is untested as yet. It's a Savage Tgt. action/17' McGowen-barrelled 8-twist .225 Win. handgun in a Neal Cooper laminated rear-grip stock and i have the old 20x Unertl BV-20 on top. Probably the only 1 ever put together like this. I have a 9-dot T.K. Lee reticle installed that looks like this--

----.

...all 3/8 IPHY dots 3 MOA spacing.

For the ultimate prairie dog reticle i'd take a look at the Horus system. Can't really get any more accurate than that really with a reticle.
