A new take on Picatinny Scope Checkers

A few guys approached me about making a Picatinny scope checker. At first I declined because others are doing so. Then I decided to try something different. Rather than duplicating what's already available (or in the works) I approached it with a clean sheet of paper. My design objective was to make a checker that does not force you to remove your scope from your rifle. I think that's a major inconvenience, and a possible source for undiagnosed movement (your mounts/ rings).

My design requires some adjustability to accommodate different rail specs and ring spacing. As long as your rings are 3"+ apart (inside dimension) and you have .400" clearance from the top of the rail to 6-O'clock on your tube, it should fit.

I have two prototypes made. They will soon be in the hands of @Alex Wheeler and @Jay Christopherson. I plan to take their input and tweak the product as necessary. If it's beyond help, I'll throw in the towel.

I'm confident that it will work, but if there's one thing all of this reticle movement has taught me, it's to test! Price and delivery info will be available once the design is finalized. I expect in about 2 weeks.

Happy 4th of July!

I like your thinking but I do have a concern. Try it with a NF BR on the outside, on a heavy recoiling rifle. If it stays solid, I'd say it's good. It very well may be fine as is. My concern is rigidity, which could be fixed if it is indeed a problem at all. I do like the concept and it may very well be a good design as is. Kudos for using your head!

If you want simple why not just use double 1" scope -flashlight mounts ?
It's been working for me the last 10-12 yrs .

Because all my scopes have 30mm or 34mm tubes?

its a great idea. One thing on my guns there isnt .400 clearance very often. Biggest thing for me is i want both scopes fastened to one platform. No need to chance the checker moving on the base skewing the results. i can leave a dedicated rifle setup for checking. Hope you do well with them though. Thanks

The idea here is to put the reference scope on the outside correct? Most frozen leupolds and such don't weigh an awful lot, so it should hold. My only concern when checking out some "leaked" photos was the two not being "linked" by a single plate. This would only create a problem if the main rifle base was to shift. The potential issues are otherwise equal between this design and a hood style. I will have to have one of these too, very convenient, good thinking.

Yes. Frozen scope outside. I hope you guys give it a thorough test this weekend. Take it apart, try it on various rigs, etc.
