A new skill to add to my resume.

I had a Canon printer and was going to print Christmas cards. It printed fine that morning and then as soon as I put a card in it I got this error code.

These are the series of logical attempts over a couple days:
* Turn the printer off and back on / Didn’t Work
* Reboot the computer / Didn’t Work
* Reinstall the software driver / Didn’t Work
* Searched online for several hours and tried every fix available / Didn’t Work
* Put cartridges in a new printer (I had a brand new one never unpacked that I used the ink out of) / Didn’t Work
* Change the printer cables and power cable / Didn’t Work
* Ordered and installed new ink cartridges / Didn’t Work
* Called Canon customer service (Wanted $99 to fix the computer and said the printer was ok, he did an online remote test and of course the printer didn't do anything) / $No way$!
* Ran several virus scanners, found nothing / Didn’t Work
* Reinstalled drivers again after wiping every trace of Canon out of the computer and registry / Didn’t Work
* Pulled my hard drive out and replaced it with my backup which had a system where the printer worked perfectly (basically a new computer) / Didn’t Work
* Said a prayer, then threatened it / Didn’t Work

But I did find a simple fix. I don't expect to have that problem again.

8 rounds of #04 buckshot from a 12 gauge repair tool. Should I box it up and send it back to Canon?

Sad, but considering their relatively low cost, a lot current electronic devices aren’t worth much effort/cost to repair... just get a new one!

Several years ago I had a new Western Digital hard drive. It crashed and took a lot of data with it. Took me a while to restore most of it. They sent me a new one and in about a month, it also crashed with nothing being recoverable just like the first one. Should I give a 3rd one a try? NO!!! I wrote it off and went back to the Maxtor drives. I never had one of those fail. But I did attempt a .308 repair on the WD drive. Nothing much to see on the entry hole but the exit in the front looked like a flower.

Printers are engineered as inefficient consumers of over priced ink cartridges.

I fully support the firing squad approach, though a sound beating with a good hammer also works well!

As a replacement I do recommend the canon ecotanks. Instead of cartridges they have ink tanks and you buy ink every 2 or 3 years. I've never had a printer (other than laser) last more than 2 years before. cartridge printers are like razors--they give them away to get you to buy blades/cartridges. The ink tank printers get you off of the high maintenance, high cost, cartridge treadmill.

I've has this printer for several years. I bought a second just for the ink a couple years ago. It had never been out of the box. It was usually only used for envelopes and cards. I've replaced the ink cartridges several times in it. Everything else I do on an HP laser. I've has countless printers over the years but it got to expensive to print pictures on them. I also went the refilling cartridges route with some success.

I've had computers since 1980 and built and worked on a lot of them. In this case, this printer(s) refused to be fixed. The only thing that comes to mind is the cartridges somehow got a virus, if that is even possible. Or in the BIOS but flashing that should take care of the problem. With a brand new (same model) printer, different cables, and a different computer (backup operating system with the original HD disconnected), this refused to work no matter what. Both printers flashed the same error code not even connected to the computer. This error seems to be common with Canon printers, lots of complaints on the internet. So why not have a little fun with it?
