I like building and trying out different rifles, calibers, etc and have a new one to try out…what it is just goes to show you how hard I had to scratch to come up with this thing but here goes.
Never cared for the .270 caliber, bullet selection was historically poor and development of anything truly good in the bullet dept was always lacking and I regularly just skipped right on by. An exception could be made for the 6.8 SPC AR’s, but I had jumped on the 6.5 Grendel bandwagon and saw no need to go there.
So when a friend ended up with several hundred .270 cal Federal Terminal Ascent bullets due to mismarked boxes (marked 7mm 155gr), Federal promptly send him the correct bullets and told him to keep the 270’s. Now THOSE bullets I like, great performance on game, well constructed, and generally shoot better than acceptable…so what was I going to build for these bullets? Started looking for a decently priced barrel blank first off. Ended up finding a new never used Beretta Mato bbl in 270 for $99. Threaded for the Mato action, but standard 1.0625x16 TPI. Then found those Weatherby 307 actions for cheap(er) through PTG and got 10 or 15% off when I added an in stock reamer in….270-08 AI….
While those were being delivered I rummaged around and came up with a Bainey’s box mag/follower, an extended bottom bdl assembly, and a lightweight (relative) HS stock I never did use sitting in the parts.
Barrel arrived and I was pleased with that, looks like it is the Lothar Walther barrel these were purported to be used on those rifles. Throat was off center, so I shortened the tenon to where the new chamber shoulder would end at the original 270 Win throat and dialed in the new throat area. Pre-bored the chamber to straighten things out and reamed 270-08 AI.
Tell you what, this isn’t my least favorite caliber anymore…mild recoil, very respectable velocity, and this darned thing put rounds 3-5 in one little knot that is less than 1/2” outside to outside…can’t complain about that! It’s the one in the middle.
