So I had been dying to shoot a match since early spring when I heard about the 1K GBA shoot at Thunder Valley in Ohio. I decided right away I was going, but then I just had to go and hear they were also shooting a mile...
The next thing I knew I had ordered a F&C 60 MOA rail to mount to my existing 20 MOA rail. I received this 6BR Ackley from Alex Wheeler just two weeks ago. It had 204 rounds on it and had showed a lot of accuracy at 1K with Hunter 103’s.

Now, according to my math, I had to zero it 42” high at 50 yards and 86” high at 100. I used a piece of foam board to do that.

At the range I signed up for a mile hoping I would be close on elevation and also be able to spot hits in the dirt. Luckily it was dry so seeing my hits was no problem and I was within 7 clicks on elevation.
This is a beautiful range and the 1 mile target backstops (to the right) sure looked a loooong way past 1K but if you don’t try you’ll never know. Not sure who is in the photo.

On the first target I had three hits all to the left side of the target. On the second target I had to dial in 7 MOA of wind change even though the flags looked the same. I found out that as expected at that distance, it doesn’t take much to push a little subsonic 103 grain bullet.
In the sight in, I got on target and even managed to hit the 18” gong. Then I shot my score rounds. My goal before the first target was to get one shot on paper so I was thrilled with three on the first target, then four hits in 16” on the second, three in 4.5”.
“If my bullet hadn’t hit that bird, I’m confident all five would have hit the paper.”
I didn’t expect to be competitive. I just wanted to give it a try and thought others might find this interesting. It really was fun and I’m glad I did it. Maybe someday I will have a competitive mile/2K rig put together. In the meantime, I have a 60 MOA rail available just in case the thought ever crossed your mind!
Oh, and yes, the bullets were still stable at a mile going around 900 fps.
