A-Max for Varmints? (chucks)

How do the A Max bullets perform? They apear to be cousins to the V Max. Are they simular as far as devistation?

Shot a coyote at 20 yds once with a 52gr A-max out of a 22'250 AI. Bullet blew a chunk out its chest size of a tennis ball.

The Hornady manual lists AMax bullets as varmint and hunting bullets.

My experience with .224, 6mm, 6.5mm and .308 AMax is they deform very easily if seated over a compressed powder charge. This would indicate a thin jacket.

I have just switched over to using the 105 A-max in a 6BR for varminting.

Before doing this we took out a 6br already chambered for the 105 A-max, it is pushing the 105s at ~2900+. The furtherest shot was 434yrds on a rabbit and it was very effective, I could see the bullet exit and hit the bank behind though. I had my 6Br with 75 v-maxes as well and shot a Rabbit at 410yrds at the same location, to me the 105 appeared to hit a lot harder....it was across a pretty big gulley so we couldn't inspect close up. We also shot magpies up to 300yrds and the 105 basically cut them in half.

During the day we ended up shooting Rabbits between 300 and 434 yrds and the 105 A-max opened up big holes. Dont get me wrong I believe that a V-max is more explosive but the A-max is easily an effective varmint projectile.

All in all I ended up switching after field testing as I can get a vastly better BC without the worry of just injuring the varmints.

I've been using 80 grn. A-Maxes in my 1 in 8" .22-250 A.I. and it is not only deadly accurate but it performs well. I've shot PA groundhogs out to 400 yds. + and have not been disappointed. A brisk load of RL 22 works well.

Howdy !

I used .75gr "A"-Max in .224" calibre, with my high capacity .224" wildcat.
I was shooting my accuracy load, which chrono'd @ 3,420fps.

Had one shoot-through on a groundhog ( chest hit ) @ 200.
Otherwise, the 75 "A"-MAx was closest I found to a " one bullet " solution, when shooting .224" calibre @ all ranges out to 1,000..... live varmint and paper.

It's one way to go, for the varminter shooter who also shoots paper matches once in a while.

I have never had a PA ground hog take a hit and run away from a 208 A-Max out of my 300 WSM...... I did however hit one last year at just over 1000 yds with a 6.5 -284 pushing a 140 A-Max and that little bas#*#* made it down the hole and denied me of my 1000 yard patch in VHA. Guess I should of had the WSM.
I have a friend that shoots the 168 A-Max's out of a 308 and they work great. Sometimes they don't even exit, the hog just "swells" up...
Just my .02 worth.

A-Max's are great for varmints! I have been using 52gr A-Max's that I bought thinking they were V-Max's one day when I was in a rush. I have been shooting them in my .222 and they do a great job on any little critters that happen to fall under my crosshairs. I don't know if they are 100% as explosive as a V-Max, but they are close!

im another guy who gives the a-max an A+ due to accuracy any effectiveness on varmints.

here is an upper chest shot on a G squirrel at about 300 yards. .223 with the 75gr Amax

My son and I just got back from a PDog trip in SD. He was using a 6x47L with 105 A-Maxes clocking about 3,030 fps. There were numerous devastating 300-500 yard shots but he also got a 720 yard shot with good results. Fell over dead with a significant wound.
