A Max for deer?

Is a 105 AMAX a suitable bullet to use for white tails? I know they are devastating on groundhogs. I was wondering about penetration. Thanks.

Depending on which year the manual was produced but one of my Hornady manuals has a list of each of their bullets and the A-Max are listed as a target, varmint, medium game bullet. Lots of people have killed a lot of deer and hogs with them. They seem to expand pretty quickly. I myself have not used any on game.

Myself, my brother and his buddy have all shot and harvested many whitetails. We never lost one or had a to stroll more than 25 yards from where they were shot. Some pass throughs, some not. All 3 of us using the 105 Amax.

One of my granddaughters just got her own .243. I have a bunch of these AMAXES. I plan on loading some for her. I figured that one of them through the lungs would be sufficient. I just needed some verification. Thanks, everyone.

While I have never shot a deer with the Amax I have shot a few, large and small, with the SST. From all the accounts of friends who have used the Amax on deer sized game I think results are pretty close. Sometimes you get complete penetration and sometimes not but it always makes a puree out of the internals.

Depending on whether you want the to run out of the field, or drop where there standing..
Myself, I like the Berger 190VLD ....

if you don't like them or want to compare something to them, the 85SGK and 90SGK are superb proven performers in 243Win on many, many deer.
May tame recoil down some and double duty for varmints.

Have personally used the 155gr .308 on numerous whitetail and one blackbear. Shots ranged from 65 to 325yards. No complaints with good shot placement. Complete pass-throughs on most. Distance traveled ranged from about 2.5'...STRAIGHT DOWN to less than 50 yards laterally. Maybe 75% weight retention on the few bullets recovered.

Have seen several deer harvested with the 22cal 75gr using a 223. All broadside shots, 50-135yards, 100% pass-through(zero bullets recovered) Only one mystery shot: large doe +/- 60yards, double lunged. Hurried exit, then walked away. Very poor blood trail. We recovered her after a long and tedious 200yd+ tracking job in the dark. The postmortem examination revealed perfect shot placement, complete pass-through, broken rib at entry, broken rib at exit.
As previously stated, a real mystery.
I suppose the deck just gets stacked that way sometimes.
