A little help please. Identify brass.

Hey all,
Looking at a large lot of reloading items that a friend acquired from Uncles passing.
Trying to help him identify and sell said materials.
Came across this brass marked 22BR Remington Manuf. But the size of a .308 and case mouth diameter approx. same.

First I thought .308 BR brass, cut why would it be headstamped 22 BR. 20250126_201419.jpg

Is that a picture of the 22br and a .308 to the right of it?

I maybe wrong but I believe back in the 70’s Remington made this brass from sp .308 brass and head stamped it 22br so you could form it into 22br cases. I also think they may have used .300 savage cases as well I’ll have to do some research on that but for now I need to hit the hay. This was before you could commercially get 22br cases

Factory mistake? Rem did make some 308 "basic" brass in a 308ish size back ages ago when shooters ran the company. It was so reloaders could neck it up or down as needed for use in non factory calibers. It was small primer. There where some benchrest shooters working at remington back then, who knows what they may have done for "testing" purposes. Also made some small primer Palma 308 brass.

I know I am old and slow but just want to make sure I am understanding. In the picture above with the 2 cases in it. The short one on the left is 6 BR and the longer one on the right is headstamped 22 BR REM?
Thanks
Doug

Yes sir. I did not do a good job of pics and posting. I look back and see it can be confusing. The case on left is a 6 BR case that was necked down to .22 cal. The case on the right is marked 22 BR, but definate .308 dimensions. Whoever had this brass loaded it and shot it as .308 as it has been fired but still .308 dia. opening. I did read where Remington did a run of brass and marked it 22BR so people could by it and build 22 BR ammo. I had a 22 Cheetah when it first came out. Bought .308 BR brass and had a 7 die set to reform to the .22 Cheetah.

+1 on what JSH said.
It is essentially “ .308 American “ brass, w/ a “. 22BR “ headstamp.

For info:
Fred Sinclair made me one of the very first .22BRs out there.

He had some Remington .308 brass Mike Walker had sent him, which featured no
head stamp… and no primer pocket. The idea was…. shooters would pick the
primer pocket size they wanted to shoot, and get the brass machined for their chosen primer size. Not withstanding….Walker’s idea from the git-go, was for .22BR to be campaigned using SR primers.

Fred asked me what size pockets I wanted him to install, on a small clutch of cases he would donate me to get started. Since I already was set up to form .22 BR cases from
.308Win, I had Sinclair cut my “ basic “ brass for SR primers; while I also formed additional .22BR cases from .308Win brass that came w/ LR primer pockets. I was new to short range benchrest, and the .22BR was also just emerging… right when the 6PPC had been out there long enough to make its presence known. The benefit of using SR primers in a short/fat case, and for that matter… the virtues of using a short/fat case design were all about to be demonstrated within interested shooting communities back then. I shot both primer sizes in the .22BR to find out for myself, and settled on using SR primer’ed cases after seeing the range results.
