a couple 8x57 mauser, and turk mauser ???'s

i bought a mil surp Turkish Mauser because i thought it looked cool. didn't have matching numbers or anything so i was going to maybe sporterize it an look for a numbers matching German Mauser. i have heard some different things about the Turk Mauser's though.

i know that they have a hood type thingy on the action to keep the upper stock piece in place. can this be taken off? ,with a lathe) and i have also heard both, that the Turk Mauser's are large action, small ring. and also that they are large ring. but i see different barrel thread sizes in midwayusa.com for the barrels. witch is it?

i was thinking about keeping it 8x57 Mauser, and hand load. could this handle hotter loads. or.... could it hold up to 338-06 if i re-chambered a new barrel for it?

another question, i have been reading alot on the 338-06, and was wondering if there where any wildcats that use the 8x57 case for the parent case. just wondering.

I play alot with mausers myself...The 8x57 is a very nice round to say the least..loads easy like a 308win and uses basically the same powders 4064 etc..,at least mine anyway)

as far as converting to 338/06 i think you`ll have to go with 8/06 there is a tad bit of difference..ww2 vets bringing home k98`s did this due to lack of ammo and the stuff that they could get was corrosive..

IMHO i`d just stay with the 8/57 hope this helps mausers sure are fun to play with and i`ve been able to load a bit hotter than factory stuff

Sierra has a mtch bullet for accurate stuff...i`ve never loaded any hunting type bullets

I miss read your post...You can rebarrel it to 338/06 no problem...i though you were wanting to rechamber the original barrel, which is what the ww2 vets did,8mm-06) but i think you`ll still like the original 8mm

The ring extention can be removed when you square the reciever face.

The turkish mausers were standard large ring 98s, but were ordered with the small ring mauser barrel threads so they would be able to use barrels that the turks had in stock at the time. The ring extention was also done by request of the turks. They later recieved liscense to produce them in country -- K Kale models.

i was going to re-use the original barrel. i was just going to lathe turn the different steps out of the barrel.

i did a side job with my father. we were doing drywall. when we cut out the 6" cans,we got 6" targets:) anyways, i was shooting them at around 50 yards, and one fell over, so i shot at it and it was cut right in half! i think that its a good barrel.

i was wanting to maybe chop it down abit. is this something i should do? i think that barrel measures 29" if i do so, am i really going to hurt accuracy and velocity? i was wanting to use it for hunting with big pills. 200-220grn. what do you guys think would be a good length for the barrel if i should cut it down.

i am working on a 7mm rem mag right now, so i don't need the Mauser for super long range. the 7 will accomplish that.

but for around hear in the Midwest, i think that it should do good. even out west. thanks guys, Brian

Just a caution - lathe turning the steps from a Mauser barrel might induce stress in the barrel steel and ruin accuracy.

i have heard so many different things on lathe turning barrels, i dont know what to believe.

what would be a good length to cut the origonal barrel to. i think that 29" is a little over kill, but i am not so sure.

Leave the steps in the barrel and shorten it to 24". Doing anything else is not worth it -- just get a new barrel and start over. The factory barrels are pretty crappy. Some of them shoot fine, but once you start screwing with them it all goes to hell -- speaking from experience. The throats are extremely long, the chambers are extremely loose, and the bores are usually pitted from rust. Although recrowning is usually needed due to cleaning from the muzzle.

Is It a K.Kale turk? Thats is the good one.

Another thing you can do with the turk is screw a swede barrel on it,small shank thread) and you have a Twede

2 questions.

1. how do i tell if its a k. kale

2. if i start with a new barrel, should i keep it 8x57? what would you guys do? any suggestions on caliber choices? why?

thanks, brian

The armory mark on the top of the reciever ring is stamped "K. Kale"

8x57, 7x57, 6.5x55 are all good choices. It would depend on what you want to do with it.

i am currently building a 7mm rem mag. so i have something thAT WILL shoot far. i am looking for something that will not bradk the bank, but push bigger pills,200-250grn) out to 250-300 yards and be accurate.

my thoughts so far are:
8x57 handloads,to reach european ballistics)
338-06
338 federal
35 whelen
358 wsm

i am guessing the firsr three would be lighter on the pocket book.

any thoughts?

to through in another one, 9.3x62 mauser. so many options, not enough money.

i think that i am kina leaning towards the 8x57 reloaded, or the 338-06. i can find 338 bullets up to 300 grns.

what would be a good twist rate for a barrel to use the 200-300 grn bullets for the 338-06?

okay, okay. i have been using my hole day off on the compooper, and i think that i have made up my mind.

winner..........................i think............338-06.

i am going to go this route. now, i have to start pricing things out, and finish my other build, then the Turk comes apart. thanks guys, input is still very welcomed. i doubt this build to take off in the next few months. just enough time to make me question myself. Brian
