A Cheaper Way to go! 30 BR

I was just wondering if there is a cheaper solution to shooting my 30 BR other than using Randy's terrific bullets. These bullets are a precious commodity. I have about 750 left and will be placing an order soon, but unfortunately you cant get a lot of trigger time in, when the bullets take about 2 to 3 months to create. Also, as far as bench matches go, they are terrific and wonderful, but for practice? I was trying to figure out a compromise - possibly using the Hornady 110 V- Max of the Nosler 110 grainer. Anyone have any other suggestions?

And another question for Mr. "Humble Harry" - Who painted your 9-11 30 BR??? It looks great. ,Hmmmm maybe this coming off season I should order 5000 bullets from Mr. Robinette!)

There are some other good custom bullets, but you're probably facing the same supply/demand situation.

Berger makes 110gr and 125gr Flatbase .308 bullets that should shoot pretty well. Both are suitable for 1/19 or faster twist barrels.

.308 CAL 110 GRAIN
ID: 30-110
Category: Bullets
Recommended twist rate is 1/19
Ballistic Coefficient is 0.288
Flat base

.308 CAL 125 GRAIN

Recommended twist rate is 1/19
Ballistic Coefficient is 0.328
Flat base

What about a Speer 125gr TNT or a 130gr HP they could be a good option for practice the TNT's shoot verry well and in 6mm people are using them in PPC's to shoot F Class to 600 yards here in Australia because they have a reasonablt high BC for a flat based bullet. The Speer 130gr is also a good bullet they could be worth a try buy a box and see what happens you may have to batch them but it could be worth it.

Al O. : The Speer 125 TNT's are a very decent bullet as are the VMax 110's.

Respectfully, practicing/load development with anything other than what you are going to shoot in competition is a waste of components and time, IMO. With a well built 30BR, you shouldn't need more than 100 rounds to find a great shooting load. That leaves you with 650 bullets left...head to some matches! :) Assuming you use 40 rounds at each Score yardage,25 record shots and 15 sighters...that's a lot of sighters), you'll be able to shoot 16 yardges of competition with the supply you have! And 16 yardages of real BR competition will be a far bigger learning tool than unending practice. For fouling shots after cleaning, use some 125 TNT's instead of the BIB's...lots of shooters do that.

And order 1,000 BIB's today to get you through the season. :thumb:

Just my 2 cents worth. :) -Al

forgive me, but what is this for? Hunter's benchrest? Just wondering why 30 BR?

I shoot 1k F-class, so this is out of my area of expertise and there are very few posts like this...I want to learn about other shooting sports.

Rhino,
Would be VFS, as the 30 BR does not meet the case capacity for HBR. I am having a HBR rifle built for this year, 30X47.

what does VFS stand for?

I am totally a newbie outside of F-class and 1k Br shooting light and heavy gun.

VFS = Varmint For Score. There are events for group and score.

Regrettably, I am further behind than ever for this early in the year - this is partly due to increased demand and also the [jacket availability] problems experienced throughout the entire past year,2005) - even my "ridiculously huge inventory",according to my accountant), was severely taxed. While nobody would like to have all of my back-log shipped more than I, the reality is that custom hand-made bullets require much more time to produce than do mass produced "match" bullets, which at the BIG name's plants, are produced at the rate of about 50,000 to 55,000 per ten hour shift!

I'll confess to being the kettle calling the pot black - but, truly hand-made BR quality bullets, whether mine or, my friendly competitor's, are a bargain worth planning ahead for. One thing that can be neither "taught" to, nor, programmed into a machine - "tactile judgment"! During cor-seating and point-up, a good bullet maker "culls" everyodd feeling bullet. Yes, a machine can perform tasks to a positive stop, a given pressure/dwell, or any combination imaginable - but, in our life-times, it will never have judgment; a particularly human trait . . . well, unless we're talking about BIG MIKE, my alter ego) ;)

Some of my competitors, who may not be as far behind with orders, but who make excellent BR quality, thirty caliber bullets: Ronnie Cheek; Ralph Council; Jeff Fowler. I hope that people who have been patiently waiting for BIB bullets will bear with me - by the end of April, I should be back to about a 4-6 week lead-time - a not unreasonable time to wait for "good stuff" - but I can understand if people cancel existing orders if they can locate other good bullets before I can get them done.

I get a number of targets, shot using the various mass produced "light weight" thirty caliber bullets, from customers "threatening" to switch permanently! ;) Some of the top aggers: Speer 125 Gr. TNT; Hornady 110 Gr. V-max; Nosler 125 Gr. BT. With these bullets, of particular "lots", some truly exceptional results are possible - just don't expect them to be as reliably consistent from Lot-to-Lot as hand swaged BR bullets.
And even within a good lot, don't be surprised by the occasional AGGREGATE wrecker . . . Keep 'em ON the X! R.G.

Randy, I dont think anyone, especially myself, implied to ever pull our orders permenantly! That would be like shooting yourself in the groin!,Damn, that would hurt!) I have plenty of your bullets left for match use and I do occasionally shoot them during practice. But I, like most shooters, want to have more trigger time. SO I was just thinking of an alternative to using your bullets. , I am ordering some with a friend of mine, about 3000 - if he hasn't ordered them already).

A loyal follower,

Al, I did not take it that way - I just wanted to let people, who may be tired of waiting, off the hook. Actually, I find it humbling and flattering that most people are as tolerant as you are. AND, I wanted to make certain that potential new 30BR shooters are aware that there are a number of excellent bullet available - BIB bullets sure aren't magic! Being constantly behind is a frustrating circumstance. Good shootin'! R.G.

Randy

Please let them off your list for two reasons.

1. Will get my bullets from you quicker!

2. Most importantly, I know that I will hopefully beat them when they shoot the inferior bullets.
