A bunch of powder in stock.

I have several notifications set on Midsouth product but either they have not gotten any of the items or just not notifying me.
The site shows no powders in stock for me at this time.
It comes and goes quick. There are still a couple powders left. I picked up an 8 lb jug of 700x last night. Not my favorite powder for 45 acp. but it works and the Dillon powder measure is supposed to meter it fairly well.

I thought I was in good shape on pistol powder, primers and bullets. That was before I found several older canisters of pistol powder that was destabilized and had to carefully dispose of it.
Now I am in need of some pistol powder but, due to a good stock of ammo, I can wait it out.

How do you tell if powder is destabilized?
How old does it have to be for this to happen??
The only powder I have personally gotten ahold of that was bad was Hodgdon H-380 that was previously opened and was on a shelf with direct sunlight on it. A little one horse gun shop a while ago.
I have several cans of powder that I've had for years that is still good. Probably the oldest I have used was IMR 4227 bought already opened with a bunch of other stuff that we used in a friends Savage muzzeloader a few years ago. I probably bought this 25 years ago and it was old then. But is in an IMR tin can (grey) so really not that old. The main thing with powder is the way its stored. I remember reading (probably in the '70s that they tested Uniuqe that had been stored (UNDERWATER!!) every year and it was still good. I seem to remember the date as 1909 when it was originaly brought out.
Not touting that as gospel, but it has been a while.
That 380 was definitly bad, it was clumpted and smelled BAD! You will know, Gary

This was a fairly old metal canister of Winchester powder that I had since around the mid 90's. It had always been stored in a climate controlled environment. I had quite a lot of pistol ammo loaded and factory ammo as well so it had been quite some time since I had paid any attention to the cabinet I kept it in. I went to check it out and found the canister to have a rusty red powder all over it. So did a one pound metal can of 296 and same of WW540.
I carefully unscrewed the cap and there was a bad smell from the can.
I promptly dumped it and the ones near it out in the backyard. One other can's contents had turned almost pure white. It had a funky smell as well.

a bunch on PV

+ more

Out of curiosity, I just flipped over to the PV site to view what might be happening with H4350 (I had managed to squeeze in a 1-case purchase of it from PV about a week ago JFTHOI.), to see how it was selling?

PV has always been my "go-to powder house". After feeling a little "down" for paying out $225/jug in that purchase, I rationalized to some of my friends that it looked like the new US standard for a jug of good powder was $225, get used to it...a price it had held for a few months at PV. Now, it appears, that new standard has moved up to $233 , along with the attendant caption: "Out of Stock".
