A 6mm for Prairie Dogs and Groundhogs?

I am looking for help with a Rem 700 project. I have not started the project and looking for input. I am sure the 6BR will work and I have a little bit of info gathered so far. I already have a .223 1:9 set up. I want something that will get out well past 300yds. Also looking at the 6mmAckley. Any help from folks using the rounds please sound off.,Already have a little feedback from the Varmint forum)

I want to know from someone using the three rounds:

1- What kind of velocities and accuracy are you getting with the Nosler/Hornady/Sierra/Speer varmint bullets - 75, 87, 105?,If there is an easy computer program to help with the velocity part, let me know.)

2- What kind of case life are you getting with the brass, primer pockets, case stretching, etc.)?

3- I guess I should also know about barrel life, round count).

Thanks in advance for the input - Tony

For max case and barrel life I would stick with the 6BR. I think it also has more accuracy potential than the others.

Have to agree.......6BR is tough to beat....12 twist...oh...maybe the 6XC......I'll let ya know...got one of each !!

Have you thought about a 6mm TCU.It looks like a 223 Ackley Improve necked to 6mm. I have a 15" barrel on a T/C Contender
and get about 3100 fps with 70gr Nosler B-Tips. Which lets me reach out to 300yds on woodchucks with little hold over.

Moneyman, your overall best bet is BR or BR impoved. But if your only interested in shooting large bullets fast the 243,6mm Rem in improved and the 6x284 for even more speed.

6ackley is a geat round, but be prepared to burn 50% more powder to get 10% more velocity.

Seems the happy spot in MOST cases is 2800-3000 with the heavy 6mm's though you might luck out and they could shoot GREAT as 3200fps+

the 105 amax in a 6ack is a critter blaster for sure.

the 6BR just has a lot more good things going for it, which were already mentioned.

Plus if i were making a 6ack, i'd be using norma 7x57 brass.

Shooting a 6mm ack. With 87 Berger Hunting VLD’s. 49 Gr of Vihtavuori N-160 is chronoing 3400 FPS out of a shilen 26” Tube. Average groups are under .5 MOA. I agree that if you want to shoot to 300 yards the 6mm ack. Is not the best candidate. It’s not easy on barrels- something with a smaller case capacity and with more inherent accuracy like a BR, XC- etc. Would be ideal, but it shines for the long range coyotes and with the heavy Berger vld hunting bullets is great for mule and whitetail here in a sask.

Just wondering.....did no notice this thread is more than thirteen years old? I'm thinking the OP made his decision a while back.

I built a 6mm TCU specifically for prairie dogs. 25 1/2 inch Krieger barrel, 1 in 9 twist. I also have a .223 A.I. and I love it. The TCU will push 80 grain v-max to 2999 fps with 27.5 grains of LT-32. It is on a Savage Action. I can get .6" five shot groups at 100 yards. I use LC brass. The brass is free and the prep time is rather lengthy. Yes, I pick my brass up at the range and turn the necks just to clean them up and get rid of the high spots. I have not used it yet, but I think it would work great to 400 yards.

20180610_212547.jpg Here are my load workups for LT32 and 6BR with 55 Varmageddons. I moly coat and my barrel is 13.5 twist. If I were going to be hunting Ghogs I would seriously consider this combo. Recoil is low and the barrel seems to be very happy at 32.9 grains.
