90VLDs and 2000MR

I haven't made it back to the range in the last couple of days.

The answer that has worked for me has been to work out all of the other bugs, and jam them 10. My chrono says I'm pushing 2900 or better.

Using my Hornady ogive tool I found an odd alignment of sorts.. The 80 Amax, the 75 Amax and the 90 VLD all measure 2.050 to the lands, but all take very different settings with my Redding micrometer seater. I'm seating the 80Amax and the 90VLD at 2.060 with 1.5 to 2 thou neck tension.

The 90's take more force to seat than the 80's because they are going further down in the case neck and have to push the pressure ring all the way to the shoulder junction. That's why the seater is at different settings.

The nose shapes are different, the VLDs are longer. I think the coincidence is that the distance from the bearing surface to the point that the ogive insert measures is the same on all three bullets. The seater stem doesn't contact at the same point on the ogive, it's not on the point but it's still out closer to the meplat than the OAL tool. I just thought it was odd. The only other place I've seen two bullets with the same measurements in contact with the lands are the 200 and 215 Hybrids in my 308 barrels. They both measure the same to contact, but they both require a different seater setting too.

600 yard test this week.

90VLDs in some wind, 10 shot group. I put 8 in about .3MOA vertical, two that were a tad low expanded the group to about ½ MOA, but I can work with that. The wind stretched the horizontal to close to 3/4 but if it had been a match it would not have dropped a point.

My 80Amax load shot like crap at 600.

.5 MOA (3 inches) x .75 MOA (4.5 inches) at 600 yards is a very good group where everything comes into play. Your brass prep, powder charge weight, etc. all show itself at that distance. If you're anywhere near 2900 FPS, you have a good load to work with.

MV 2952 FPS Av

If I was shooting 1000 I'd be trying to work on the ES, it was 34. Seven out of 10 were w/i 10FPS, and 6 of those were w/i 4FPS ES. Three shots of the group were in the 2960 to 2970 range, but at 600 it's not so bad.

That was using LC brass that I have a bucket full of that came to me sized. Now that I've fired it all in this rifle I'll get it sized with a proper head space and it may tighten up a little but it should be fine.

Wade,
I know lots of people have reported obtaining almost unbelievable velocities with 185 Juggernauts using the PP2000MR (ie. 2850 fps). However, are you really getting 2960 - 2970 fps with the 90 VLDs out of a 28" barrel? If so, that must be an extremely hot load. It sounds as though you've gotten them to shoot very well (consistently), but that velocity seems awfully high to me. Using a Ba value in Quickload for H4895 adjusted for my actual MV, my rifle with a 30" barrel would be running at over 65K psi to reach 2960 fps, and it still would be quite a bit below the next OBT node. I'd run the numbers with PP2000MR, but I don't have the data files for it in QL. In any event, I hope you've gotten everything working to your satisfaction, but don't push the envelope too far (safety first)!

That's what the Chrono said on three shots, but I don't always believe my chrono either. (and yes you can get to 2850 with a 185, but I couldn't get them to shoot there so I'm running them at about 2780 to 2790 now) Those were the three highest readings. My 10 shot average was 2952 including those. The others were all 2944±4 I don't know what you entered for an OAL, mine are at 2.650.

I'm shooting the 90 VLD at 2760 out of a 28" tube. I could probably get 2800, but that would be pretty much max with my set up. Maybe I'm not "adventurous" enough to reach those speeds. But I can envy!

gstaylorg, I'm using PP2000MR. The charge I am using is 25.7gr. I stopped at 26.0 during testing because of severe primer flattening, but I did not have ejector swipe or heavy bolt lift. So, maybe I could go higher, but like I said, I did not want to get too adventurous at this point.

Thank you for the info on your load work - that will give me another powder to try as well (of course I will start lower and work up to my max).

What load are you running XTR? I read somewhere of a guy running 26 grains of 4350 and getting 2850 with low es. Anybody try 4350?
