87gr Vmax for hunting deer sized game?

Hey guys

Almost hunting season here in South Africa. Quick question, has anyone shot a white tail deer or something similar in size with Hornady's 87gr V-Max bullets on the shoulder? How was the penetration and the meat damage? Is this bullet's expansion too fast for shooting on or just behind the shoulder? Or is this only a head shot bullet?

Run a site search this topic has been beat dead on here many many times. U are going to get every extreme possible from yes it has dropped them dead in their tracks to don't use them they are unethical for deer hunting.

haha, yeah I just read through a couple of them.... Just a second too late after I posted the question @ 1holeaddict

And I saw I already asked the same question, totally forgot about posting it the previous time :o

Up grade to 105 Amax and your good for both whitetail and varmints. I shoot the Amax's in my 6-47L and it's dropped everything from 200lb hogs to whitetails and coyotes. It's my go to bullet in that cartridge, I push them with RL17.

William, yes your 10tw is likely to slow. I owned a 6-47L 10tw and it wouldn't stabilize bullets heavier then 95grs, but shot Berger 80gr FB & 88gr FB into one ragged hole. The barrel that I'm shooting the 105 Amax in is a 8tw.

With a memory like that i sure hope you keep cheat sheets of all your reloading procedures. Ha Ha ;D
105 Amax and dont look back

Behind the shoulder has worked good for me. Directly in the shoulder, not so good. The distance your shooting and speed of the bullet come into play a lot also.

Has anyone tried the 87gr hornady interlock on game?

Between those two choices, it's a no-brainer.

Don't use a V-Max on deer.

Just cause you "can" do something doesn't mean you "should", especially with so many better choices available.
