870 wingmaster stock stripping

I have an Remington 870 Wingmaster that has a serious gouge in the butt stock. Has anyone ever stripped the factory plastic type coating off of one of these stocks? Any advice much appreciated.

Aviation paint stripper usually works pretty good. It helps a bit to scuff it well with course sandpaper first. I suppose it helps the stripper penetrate and get underneath the finish. Use gloves and proper safety equipment. That stuff don't play.

Take off the butt plate/pad. Get some Zip Strip, lay the stock on plastic wrap (large piece), pour it all over the wood and then wrap it up and let sit in sun light or some place warm 24hrs. Remove the plastic and scrap off the gel. Still have bad spots reapply and do it again. Then sand with 80 grit paper and then 120/ 240 and if good appliy finish.

Last factory rem stock I did was a '71 582 with that thick varnish they used. I soaked in aircraft paint stripper, let it sit a couple hours then scraped that off. Neutralized with a fresh water bath and had only the low spots to deal with after that.
