80.5 full bore in 22-250 ai

Curious if anyone has used the 80.5 at the speeds that the 22-250 AI's push it ? Heard great things using it in a 223 but not alot on speeds approaching and over 3500 fps.

I don't think a guy could get it up to 3500 in a 250ai.

I've shot 80smks up to 3360 and 75 bergers to 3465.

I suppose anything is possible but I would guess your speed would be 3400 or under.

Either way you look at it it'll be a lot of fun for long range varminting.

Couldn't say for sure as I haven't shot it yet. It wears a 30" barrel so im guessing it will be in the low 3500s. Curious about the full bore bullet as I hear it is easy to get accuracy from in the 223 guns.

3.5K FPS sounds very fast by maybe 200 FPS.
I'm not really concerned about top speed as much as wondering if that bullet shoots well at 500 fps faster than a 223. Whatever a 223 will shoot this 80.5 full bore bullet at, the Ackley will shoot 500 fps faster. That's my question. Has anyone pushed one at 22-250 Ackley speeds and had great results. That's more the question.

My 26" Criterion 1:7.5 twist 22-250 AI shoots 80 gr amaxes 3450+ with a case full of RL 23. Seems to shoot the best at 3350 fps though.
This is what experienced Ackley shooters are telling me as well. There getting 3450-3550 with 80 Amax bullets with a couple different powders ( with 26-28" barrels). Again I'm hoping for the same accuracy in the berger full bore design

As far as the bullet handling the speed yes it will. I have a 22-243AI that I'm running the 80.5's at 3600. That's where my accuracy is so I keep them there. Consistently shooting about 2"-2.25" groups at 600
Ya I expect max speed won't be the sweet spot so I'll try a few different powder options and settle on the most accurate option. Thanks for the input. Glad to hear it. Had a couple guys say that they are easy to work with and aren't picky to develop accuracy loads with in there 223s.

I know this, is an OLD post! But, I'm curious about, how everyone is doing with, the Berger 80.5 gr. Bullet and the .22-250 Ackley Imp. 40*,.. the kind of ACCURACY you guys are getting at, say 300, 500, or, 600 yards and what velocity, in the 26-28 inch 1-7 to 1-8 , barrels. What powders, do you guys think, are "best", now ! I'd like to hear about, "accurate" loads with "reasonable velocities", in the 3,100- 3,300 FPS range ( not looking for lazer guided, Barrel burning,..flaming Missiles) is there any kind of consensus on loads,.. YET ? THANKS, in advance !

They were on my next to try list back in the spring , but the old posts I dug up about them were less than encouraging.

@ grovey,.. I'm hoping that, a few shooter's, will give us an account of, their "accuracy" and the Powder's used. CLANCY, on this site, has used them, at 3,345 FPS ( he said they were VERY destructive, on Coyote fur and he said that, he was giving up on them for that reason but, he didn't state, the kind of accuracy, he was getting). I've read several "good" reports on people shooting small groups at 300 and 600 with, the 80 VLD and 80.5 Berger's, in a .223 Rem/ AI versions. Like 284winner said, we are hoping to read MORE about, the easier to "tune" and shorter Bearing surface of the 80.5 "fullbore" and "good" SAFE, Load's for, the .22-250 Ackley. I'm especially interested in hearing about using,.. RL-26, H4831sc and N160-N165, Powders. WILDCHILD said, he was using 41 Grains of RL-26 in his Ackley Imp and getting superb, accuracy, with the 80 VLD's.. in the Loads for .22-250 section !

Have no experience on coyotes but very easy to load and shoot giving 2" groups at 500 yards without any trouble. Hitting a steel spinner at 500 every shot. Never measured actual groups. Better accuracy than the 75/80 Amax so far.

Here I am....

Yea they shot a lot of great groups for me at .010 off and .005 in alike. I of course used H4350.

I have since discontinued their use, because they worked far too well. I don’t skin coyotes, but I don’t need an awful mess every time either. I have absolutely never seen anything that nasty, period.

Happy hunting.

Thanks, Clancy and 284 winner for your replies ! The Berger 80.5 seems like, one of the "better" bullets for me, to try ! I'm just looking for good accuracy at "reasonable" velocities, say about,.. 3,100 to 3,300 FPS. Any "hints" on a starting/ MAX charge of H4350, Clancy ?
@ 284 winner do you have, any load suggestions ? My #4 Brux, 1-8 twist, will be ordered Monday and talks with, my Gunsmith will start soon after Bbl arrives about freebore available on HIS reamers. PS; I know how, to "work up" loads, CAREFULLY ! Been reloading, since the early 1960's and shot my first deer with a reloaded 180 Hornady, in a surplus SprgFld .30-06 that, I stocked, in 1962 ! I now have a .22-250 Rem but only shooting 52-60 grain bullets ( great, to 200-300 or so unless,.. Windy!) YEP, the Wind blows a lot, here in Idaho thus the "need" for, BIGGER Bullets ! THANKS in advance, Guys !

@ Clancy, you stated 3,345 FPS with, one of your loads, how much H4350 did it take to get "there" with, the 80.5 and barrel length used, please ! I will use this Load, to 600-700 yards on, Targets/ Steel gongs, so accuracy is most important (not speed) to me. Sierra Data shows; their 80 grain (probably has, a longer Bearing surface) at, 36.5 grains of H4350 EXT. as the Maximum charge and going 3,200 FPS, in a 26" bbl. So, I'm "curious" ! Again,..Thanks !

I shot a 22x47, with Lapua brass of course and a small primer. It’s an extremely stout loud, so you wouldn’t get me to share it.... but I’d say if you start in the comfort zone and stay away from sticky bolt lift and ejector marks you can definitely find something to suit your needs.

I will say I used a 22” Brux #5, so with a 26 you should be able to get similar speeds safely.

I’m shooting 70 grain RDF now with fantastic accuracy, like could probably be competitive at the club level. I have no idea what they’ll do on varmints but the small tip doesn’t scare me one bit at 3390 fps. I can run the bolt with one finger. Seating depth with that bullet was CRITICAL, I saw groups from the low .1s to the high 1.0s based solely on seating depth. I then moved on to powder, and it doesn’t seem to care much what the charge is. Running 3390 with an ES of 6 FPS.

A different animal, but , I've been as high as 37.2grs of H4350 in a std 22/250 with Lapua brass and the 75 gr ELD bullets. No chrono results, but 36.2 grs shined in my 22.5" bbl with that bullet and another in it's weight class.
