8 yesterday afternoon

Good shootin', Mr M. 8 will get that seasonal total jump started.

Were they around the edges of planted corn? I've been getting all mine in either sprouted soybeans or recently baled hay. However, yesterday I shot a mom and pup in a recently planted corn field - no greenery for 50 yards. Why she chose to live there is beyond me. 126 for the season so far.

Bill, one was feeding in a cornfield but it's burrow was in the tree line. The others were in a grass pasture bordered by an alfalfa field. They came from both sides of the fence line. I have seen many with their holes in cornfields and attribute it to crop rotation by the farmer. Many were alfalfa fields prior and changed to corn. I haven't seen any bean fields yet and last year there were many. Corn prices are up as, in a slap in the face of the hungry of the world, we continue to make fuel from food!!! Looks like it will be the year of the corn and this particular farm just rotated a 7 year 20 acre alfalfa field to corn.

I hear ya. I hate in when they turn alfalfa fields into corn fields.

According to the farmer that was a new hole that I mentioned. Plus it was corn last year as well. The farmer plants corn after corn with fertilizer because he chops it and the field is near his silos. That was why I was a little baffled. I hunt last year's beans in the spring until corn (or whatever) sprouts. Of course, hay/alfalfa anytime its less than about 9 inches tall. By the way, groundhogs like newly sprouted winter wheat.

I was out this morning. Wind was gusting to 15 MPH. I watched 3 come out into beans, but before I could get set up on them they went back to their holes. I could almost hear them say "Piss on this wind, I'm going back in my hole." However, I did get 2 pups that didn't seem to mind the wind plus an adult that had a wind break from tall weeds and was a little too slow going back to his hole.

View attachment 1012298 Had an early day yesterday and like any self respecting Chucker I took advantage of it! I went to a farm that I will lose shortly due to the corn and it worked out well. No long range shooting, 255 yards the longest and most were 200-240, and all were standing from the Bog Pod. I also walked to within 30 yards of 4 buck and a doe. I was like "Indian underwear", always creeping up on you! Also had a large swarm of honeybees in a the tree I selected as my stand so I made the decision to move to another 15 yards away. The farmer has been following them and was glad to hear they were still there. The 5X45AI performed admirably and the only miss came when I dialed in the difference between the 39's and 55's the wrong direction, dooh! Brings me too 42 so far as the weather has put a damper on getting out much. Sounds like it will finally warm up/dry out now. This one has an eye out for you Snert!
I think he is trying to look DEEP within himself.
