7X61 S & H 1-14" twist

I have a Model 54J that is a 1-14" twist chambered in S & H. What is the longest bullet this twist and chambering will shoot. So far I cannot make 139 Gn bullets work and the way I calculate it I cannot get a good number with 120 Gn either at 1.236" in length for the 120 tipped Barnes. Am I limited to a V-max 120 or something shorter? Thanks for the help in advance & God bless.

Factory Norma load was a 154 and later 160 Hornadys..............???????
The S&H has always had a 1-14" twist, always was known for accuracy.
Maybe its the scope or the rifle itself.........or you :):):)

What I have found is that most were 1-12" in most if not all of the data I have found in my research 1-10" as a special. The gun looks to be in better than average condition inside and out. What I should have said is that the Norma factory 156 gn bullets keyhole went down to 130's and still not round entry holes and large groups. I thought it was me but it seems no one I have let try it can do better. Using the calculation the stability factor of the 120Gn Barnes tipped triple at 1.236" only offers a .8xx stability factor at 3200 fps. I can only get to the 1.4 stability at 1" or under by the calculation. I had hoped with a 28" barrel I could get the TTX to work. Thanks for the observations though I bought it because of the accuracy claims and the 8 boxes of ammo sweetened the deal beyond my ability to resist.
Thanks & God bless.

These things shoot. My brother came across one that was in great condition and it also came with several boxes of handloads. He asked me to take it along with me to the range. After looking at the quality of the hand loads i was kind of worried about sending them down range. After firing 7 rounds i was amazed to find them in a quarter sized group.

Just sold one for a customer. The Sierra manual used a 10 twist on a Schultz & Larsen, for their load developement. The rifle I sold was on an FN Mauser, Fajen stock, Douglas CM barrel, double set triggers and a 1939 Carl Zeiss Jena scope. The rifle was built by Flaig's, and has a 12 twist barrel. Still shoots the 168 Gr. BTHP's well.

Talon,

With a 1x14" twist, you're stuck with short, lightweight bullets in this rifle. Can't get around physics, and that's about all that's going to give you round holes out of this slow a twist.

Thanks, A guy can hope that the gains in bullet and powder since this was invented may offer something to help. All I could get to shoot were 110 gn hp bullets. Guess I'll make it a LR varminter.
Thanks to all who offered help.
God bless, Talon
