7x47 Lapua, Just thinking out loud.

I am hanging out down here in my loading room looking at a new action i have sitting around doing nothing and i cant really come up with anything to do with it except build a ground hog match rifle. I have a 6br and a dasher so i am wanting to do something a little different. I was first of all thinking about a 30x47 lapua for the bigger holes it makes on the scoring rings, until i was looking at a Berger bullet chart and i noticed that i can get a 140gr 7mm bullet with a pretty decent BC. Better than a 30cal bc anyway. I would have to go up into the 175gr class of 30cal bullet to match the 140gr 7mm bullets performance. You know that brings up another issue itself. A 140gr 6.5mm bullets beats them both by a considerable margin, but you would have to give up some on bullet diameter. So heck i dont know what direction to go? Has anyone here done a 7 mm x 47 lapua with the 140gr bullets? Fellas like i said im just thinking out load here. I am in no hurry to do anything. I figure i need a couple winter projects so that is my reasoning for all this. Plus i do intend on participating in the ground hog matches the varmint hunters association puts on every year in indiana. Lee

Even though the 7mm bullets do have better BC numbers than many of the 308 bullets out there, there is currently no real custom bullet maker, that I know of, making true custom match 7mm bullets.

thanks doc i didnt realise that. Do you think the berger 140 is a good bullet, or would it be to big of a risk building a rifle hoping it is going to shoot that bullet? I guess if it didnt shoot that bullet well, there really isnt anything else to choose from?? Lee

skeetlee, If you look at the 7mm IHMSA what your thinking of doing is very similar. Alot of the info will be for shorter pistol length barrels, but there is some rifle info as well.

Skeetlee,
Please let me know what you think about the 7mm IHMSA after looking at the data. I don't have the What-If software to plug in the 7X47 data but I also would like to know what it could do.

why not just run a 7mm-08 or 7mm-08ai. i am building a standard 7mm08 to run the 162 amax. hopefully the magic rl17 powder will help me get good velocity. I had a 284 but didn't like the long action mags and alittle much recoil for fast shooting strings.
