7WSM question

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
I don't own any short magnums so I'm a little confused here. I've seen a number of topics referring to 7WSM on this other sites, many refer to chamberings that are either necked up from the 270WSM or down from the 300WSM. On the other hand Midway sells Winchester 7WSM brass.

Is the 7WSM different from the 7/270-300 WSM chambering? Or are people just looking for brass from a different manufacturer?

yes. the true 7 is longer to shoulder than the other two. some are necking up/down the 270 and 300 and using the longer necks and slightly less capacity.

7SAUM has smaller case capacity than either the 7/270WSM or the 7/300WSM, but not by much. In order by case capacity you have 7SAUM. Of the WSMs, the 7/270 WSM is the lowest case capacity, the 7/300WSM is slightly more, true 7WSM highest capacity.

guys,

i believe the 7/270 wsm and 7/300 wsm are the same case cap.

the 7 wsm is larger as is pointed out.

i don't believe either of the 7/270 or 7/300 can be fire formed to the 7 wsm. if it can be - WHY, when you went for the longer neck in the first place.

FWIW - is the SLIGHTLY LONGER NECK worth the work???

i personally went with the SLIGHTLY LARGER case cap. GIVES YOU MORE LATTITUDE to work vel. to over 3100 if you desire!

i'm useing the PTG 7mm WSM MATCH reamer w/ berger 180 HYBRID. bullet BT is in case with no body BELOW the neck. if the longer neck gives you MORE neck tension, than take up another thou in neck resize.

Based on what I've seen on for sale threads discussing the brass for the 7/270-300 I think that you are right they are the same size.

I know it is done, there are 2 rifles for sale over on SH now in this configuration, and I didn't understand it at the time he was showing it to me but this last summer someone here at Oak Ridge was shooting one he commented that he was using a 270 necked up. As far as I know though they don't fire form, they just neck up or down to .284 from the 270/300 cases.

Until the last week or so I'd just assumed that Winchester never bothered to make a 7WSM and people were making their own. When I figured out that there was such animal I was confused. Now somewhat less so.

The original 7mmWSM was made with a slightly longer shoulder so it couldn't be accidentally chambered in a 270 WSM
