7WSM load help

Well first off guys I've been loading rifle stuff for many years but I got bored one day and came up with a project that well took me out of my comfort level, I built a 7WSM Striker pistol with a 20" barrel and load develpoment is really working my nerves. I'd like to ask some of you that have the Quickload software to run some numbers for me for a reccomended powder. I tried some loads with Retumbo and well in the 20" barrel I think it's just too slow with the 162 A-Max bullets.

What I'm after I don't know if I'll get there or not but I'd like to see this rig get 3000fps as I like to shoot stuff out there a ways, what I got this weekend was less than spectacular but I have ame a fun rig to say the least. Best I got was 2782fps :-( Here's the specs

Winchester brass
Hornady 162gr A-Max @ 3.00 COL
Federal 215 primers

Here's a pic of the pistol

Yes I know my bench is a mess :-) Later,

i was following this on LRH also. my 26.5" rifle is pushing 168's at just over 3000. like 3030. RL25 at 68.5 GR I may be able to push it harder but it shoots so well how it is. I talked to Ernie on handgunhunt.com (http://www.handgunhunt.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/79618/page/0/fpart/1) extensively about this very caliber in a handgun length barrel that is NY legal for hunting. 16" max. we came up with just 2700 or so with 162 and a 16". could have a fast barrel could have a slow barrel who knows. im thinking you may get a little over 2800 max and not by much. even if you hit 2800 your drops are like this give or take of coarse this data is to be confirmed in the field.

I have a 6BRX in a rear grip configuration and just purchased another on that is stock in 7mm-08 that I am going to be making a rear grip and most likely a 7mm-08 AI. I only want to shoot to 600 or so on game with it and it will have the energy and speed it needs to do that. good luck and let us know how you make out

I have had excellent results with both WW Supreme 780 & Hodgdon's H100V in my 7 WSM w/Berger 168's. My rifle responded better to Fed. 215 Magnum Match primers.
That is the coolest stock I have ever seen.

I have read and experienced that in general the powders that give best velocity in a rifle length barrel will be the same ones in a handgun length barrel. you have a rifle length barrel there. more of a carbine I guess. so your slow mag powders should work. try some H4831 maybe

I was loading per rifle specs and with the Retumbo and 70.5gr. of powder I should have seen close to 3006fps in a rifle, missing the 6" of barrel I had a muzzle flash that would have scared most folks from all the powder that was not getting burned.

I have some RL17 and I shoot Hybrid100V in the 284 so these are my next steps I believe and we'll see what happens. I think 3K is a pipe dream but hey ya gotta dream :-) I'm seating these out there a ways so I have a little more room for some powder I just don;t want to stuff it too full that's why I was hoping someone could run the numbers on Quickload. This is a program I'd use once or twice a year but sure wish I had it now! oh well back to the old school ways :-)

wc872 thanks for the comment on the stock! I got lots of looks this past weekend at the range! don't know it is was because of the stock or wondering what kind of nut would shoot something like this ;D Later,

OK, Kirk. Here is some QL suggestions. I know nothing about this cartridge but I do know something about these powders. According to QL, you should get maximum MV with 100% powder burn in your 20 inch barrel with the Amax seated to a COAL of 3.022 from RL-25 or Norma MRP. Everything else that gives decent MV leaves unburned powder. MRP has given excellent ES and MV in my 284 Shehane although I think it might be a bit temp sensitive. Keep us informed of your progress.

Tony, thanks a mess I know I had lots of unburned powder lighting off outside the barrel Sunday! kinda cool though but not productive. I shot you a PM with a question didn't know if it was something you would want to post. I'll keep everyone up to date as it seems there are a couple of folks out there that are interested in the results. Thanks again! Later,

Kirk

Well took her out again yesterday with some RL17 thinking this powder is going to be my savior! WRONG! a little more velocity but not anything to write home about. Best I got was 2811fps the next load .5gr heavier the velocity dropped and the bolt handle was a touch sticky.

TonyR, I'm off to visit my folks this weekend and well this big city I live in doesn't have crap for loading supplies so I'll hit the little town so I can get what I want. So TonyR I'll get some RL25 and give it a try and I guess we will go from there. I did have one load that the ES was 4fps so I wrote that one down in my goodie book :-) Later,

Kirk
