7WSM feeding

I am going to start another project soon thanks to 40X with the stock he had listed that i could not resist :o I have been wanting to build a 7WSM for awhile now and i am thinking of doing it on the stock i got from him. The stock is a HS Precision stock and believe it is the 025 stock. My question is i would like it to feed from a standard Remington setup than to have it set up to feed from a detachable mag system. I would even go as far and purchase a quality set up ( bottom metal ) from someone else if it would make a difference in feeding than to use the Remy set up. Am i going to run into a bunch of issues trying to make something work that should'nt be or is the detachable mag set up the only way to go to make it feed reliably. Thanks for any help you got.

I did the smithing for 40X and am familiar with the stock you are talking about, you will not be disapointed. As to feeding, I have done that and it is not for the faint of heart. I used a Wyatt mag box to gain length and then the trick is to find the right follower, then some filing and grinding of the feed rails an ramp. It worked after many hours of effort and required major effort to get three into the mag. That was eventually replaced by a Seekins detachable mag system that is a caenter feed and works much better. If length isn't an issue then use an HS detachable mag. THe feed lips need to be rebent to the correct width with their tool. Much more "sporter"
look than the Seekins. Note this isn't a home gunsmith project, if you remove too much rail you WILL be buying a detachable mag system!

I am working with one right now that feeds acceptably. The problem I have encountered is HORRIBLE brass. I would never buy or build another 7WSM. I would, however, build a 7x300WSM. Good 300 brass is to be had and you can simply neck it down and go. With the 7WSM, the shoulder is a good ways further forward and requires a fireforming shot with the better brass. Sized a bunch this morning. Will shoot them Monday and see.

The detachable mags or a center feed Wyatt box work the best. Stagger fed WSMs are a nightmare and I won't even try it. Some rifles work I guess but the ones that do it best are with the center feed option- I can only get two below.

If you are talking about simply necking a 270WSM case up with no shoulder alteration, I think this is effectively the same case. Some people like to neck up, other down. When there is no shoulder difference, the only problem is that you will possibly induce the creation of a donut where the neck and shoulder meet with the 270WSM brass.

There are certainly more choices with 300WSM brass than there are with 270. I wouldn't neck 270WSM brass to 7WSM as there is no way to hold the case against the bolt face like there is with the 300 brass. I back the die off about .070" from the top of the shell holder and run the 300 case in. It lease quite a bit of the 300 neck unsized. This is what the case headspaces on. Can't do that with 270 brass unless you first neck it up to 308 and the partially back down.
