7SAUM action

Hello All,

I am thinking about building a 7 SAUM for 1000yrd F-Open. I plan to use either the 180 gr Berger hybrids or maybe the Sierras. Would I need a long action to build on or could I get away with a short?
Thanks for any help.

Better find some brass first. I'm going to the .284 next year just because I can't find brass at a decent cost for the 7RSAUM.

Thanks Clowdis,

I will definitely do some searching before I settle on the 7RSAUM. I have been shooting the 6.5x284 for the last year or so. That's been a great round, but the brass for that is so expensive! I did some research and it looked like the 7RSAUM was a lot cheaper and it looked easier to come by. I have from now until spring to acquire some though, so that might not be too bad.

The 7 SAUM round is a great round. I would seat a bullet in a piece of brass and measure it before buying a short action.

If its for an F Open rifle it won't matter what the loaded rd measures..... If he needs to remove a round he could always just pull the bolt and remove it.

That's what I was thinking Cigarcop.

My only problem is I was thinking of building it on an Eliseo F-Class chassis. I would have to tear the rear off to pull the bolt right?

I'm using a long action on my 6.5x284 and I don't think I can eject a loaded round in that with out yanking the bolt either.

Does anyone know what the OAL cartridge length is on a 7RSAUM with the 180 Berger hybrids? I made a CAD model of the assembly so I can see what it would look like!

what do you think.

You can use the long action without problems that you may have with a short action. COL depends on you, your bullet, and chamber. You need to seat a bullet in your brass that does not intrude into your brass so far as to reduce your powder capacity. You need to measure "your" COL and make your decision and not what Joe Blow says is right. Cigarcop is right and if you can pull a loaded cartridge when needed with a SA, it ain't a problem.

On my 7RSAUM I am using the Stolle Panda Long Big Bore action. The port is just about perfect for a round loaded with the Sierra 175 MK so I don't need to pull the bolt to extract a round. In a tube gun you should use a long action because the 7RSAUM loaded with the heavy bullets ends up being a pretty long cartridge for a short action, in fact too long. You won't loose anything in the accuracy department by using a long action but you will gain a bunch at the convenience end of things.

+1 for about a million times.

You'll have marginal luck with necked down 300SAUM,
but even the brass you do find will be sub-par. Remington brass is ok, but ~1 out of 3 gets a loose primer after first or second reload.

I'd recommend the .284 for ease of parts availablility.

BTW, 180gr Berger can be loaded to 2.820" (short action). I have one and it loves the 180gr bergers (so much so that its starving while I look for more).

Mac,
I'm confused about your post. Are you say a necked down 300SAUM ain't good?

Sorry, no necked down 300saum is fine, Remington brass hasn't held up for me consistently. Good luck finding 7saum brass, easier to find 300 and neck it down is what I meant. That's with 180s going 2825fps from a 24.". Near maximum, but shoots great!

Go short action. It will be stiffer and for the number of times a season you have to pull the bolt to remove a round, it is not an issue.

IMO, .284 Win is a better choice as others have mentioned. Quality brass is easy(er) to come by by necking up Lapua 6.5-.284. If you don't mind the fire forming extra step and want 100 fps more, go with the Shehane flavor. Otherwise .284 Win can yield 2800 fps which is plenty of speed.

My comment above on bolt removal relates to standard bolt action configuration, not Eliseo. Why Eliseo? Just curious. I have not seen many on the line in our neck of the woods and not seen anyone win with one as of yet. Although, I admit there are few around here so statistics rule.

Thanks for all the input guys.
I think I'm gonna stick with a short action.
I was thinking of going with an Eliseo just because I like the look of the tube chassis. There aren't many F_Open guys around here shooting with them either. I might end up calling Carl Bernowski for a nice wood stock!
