7mm08 for hunter bench rest

260guy: I'm not sure if there are any matches in your area, but there are some very good BR shooters just a couple hours South of you in Fargo, N.D. I had heard that they were going to be running a few matches in the Fargo area. I would be happy to foward the email of a contact person if you'd like.

Were you thinking of a full length 308W when you mentioned staying with a .30? They take a bit of a different approach for HBR use from the smaller .30 cal. minimum capacity cases. -Al

In todays competitive environment, a Hunter rifle has to be a sub .250 gun with the better rifles able to shoot flat .200's or better in good conditions. Remember, these are 5 shot groups with a 6 power scope. When you start moving any of these Score guns,Hunter or VFS) around to 5 different aiming points,targets....6 incl. the sighter) is where the real expertise in Score shooting lies, IMO.

The 6 power scopes are really not that much of a handicap at 100 yds, as the top Hunter scores in a given tournament will usually rival the upper VFS scores. Both classes use the same target. At 200-300 yds. is where things get tough for the 6 power guns.

Actually, I think a very, very cool BR class would be a 6 Power GROUP class...what a ball that would be! My pal Randy Robinett has on occasion shot his Hunter gun, complete with 6X scope) in registered NBRSA group tournaments and has done surprisingly well.

Just some Sunday morning thoughts.... -Al

I have write : hunter doesn t request very high accuracy

because

Hunter is not a group size match but a count point match, even if with the time Hunter is now a full race competition with rifles very very far from the hunter class spirit of the beginning, rememebr the 30.30 Win as minimum water capacity ..)

that from point of view more easy to begin to shoot in hunter class with a good varmint rifle in 6 mm or bigger caliber than to want to compete / challenge with top fuel rifle in 100/200 PPC arena .

I still think Hunter class doesnt need top fuel rifle to play, perhaps NOT to win but surely to learn a lot, but perhaps next year the winner will be a brand new 8 mm 1 in 20 pitch very all true custom components .

I still think that some caliber / cartridge are more easy to shoot in the wind than other and perhaps the way to refersh the Hunter class is to forbib win flag in Hunter class, if Hunter class was the Hunter rifle competition at the beginning where do you see win flag in the hunting field ?

that just my point of view

good shooting

DanTec, Both BR orgs. still require that Hunter class cartridges hold 45 grs. of water. The same as the 30-30 Win.
I totally disagree with your position on accuracy reqirements for Hunter class. Just because we don't shoot for groups doesn't mean the level of accuracy, required to win, decreases.

you doesn t need to disagree I just try to explain that

IF, logical word ) you want to play with top accuracy and make very little group, you can, as already post ) shoot 100/200 light class with your hunter rifle why not because IF you get 0.2 group with a 6 power scope you probaly reach the top with a regular 36x BR scope

I just try to explain that

To shoot hunter rifle BR class you doesn t a top fuel rifle, because that possible to get acceptable count of point without a 0.2 or less group rifle, that is not possible in 100/200 BR because IF, logical word ) you want to or try to make something acceptable you MUST, condition ) use a tight group rifle in the level of accuracy of the best in the line, except shooter skil because a batch of $ have nver make a top shooter but sometime that helpfull )

for my point of view
all shooting style and competition start with low level equipment and with the time upgrade up to request absolute top fuel rifle and I think that not the best to promote a type of shooting and keep it popular, I really think to that to start to shoot Hunter that doesnt request absolute top fuel rifle, wich is very far from the, I think ) from the original Hunter class spirit

now If you are happy to shoot Hunter class with top fuel rifle I happy for you, but if in some years you find that Hunter class start to loose popularity I will not able to do something for you

good shooting

While hunter class was started as a entry level class it has evolved into a high level specialized class, not on the level of
top fuel, but more on the lines of NHRA super stock.
This class, if you don't know, has some restrictions on what can be done like using a stock carburetor body and factory installed cylinder heads.
Hunter class is similar in having somewhat difficult restrictions, like 45gr case capacity and 6 power scope among others) but like racing you have to have the best parts and performance to stay competitive because everyone else will have them.
