7mm STW or 7mm WSM? Can I get 1500yds from either?

What is the BC on the Mk 19???

Probably not very good:

Wayne,
Just to add to the affray!

I have had real time shot for shot experience shooting a 7mm 270 Wsm with 180 Berger VLD against two .338 Lapua's shooting 250 grain scenar Lapua bullets at extreme ranges upto 1800 yards, the 7/270 ran rings round the .338 for accuracy, we had several first shot hits at various distances from 1200-1800 whereas the .338's (a timber wolf and AI-AW could not get close even after several attempts, I shot the Timberwolf at short range and it put in a sub 1/3 moa group at 100 metres so it was an accurate rifle, given that the 2 7/270 were custom F Class rifles you can allow a margin however not 10-15ft one at the distances shot.

We were hitting the fig 11 at 1550 yards virtually every shot with the odd atmospheric and wind drift anomaly (we were shooting over a valley) we had no real wind indications apart from a wind vane at the firing point.

Our conclusion was the 180 Berger bullet driven at almost 3100 is an awesome tool, however the .338 will deliver massive downrange energy, which you really do not need for targets.

This was a realtime proven test, shooters were extremely experienced (military instructor firing the .338) firing quality ammunition and rifles.

Hope this helps your choice, I think any competition proven cartridge that can launch the 180 over 2950 will be a suitable platform for ultra long range shooting.

50gunner,
I am building it on a Remington short action and making a single shot out of it for that reason. I ordered a Broughton 5R 1-9 to finish @ 28"s. I am bedding it into a 40X Kevelar McMillan stock. I plan on shooting the 162AMAX or 168 Bergers.

I hope it will be a shooter. I am kindof nevous now this is my first Broughton and I just recently heard that they had some problems with their 7MM barrels. I have always used either Kreigers or Pac Nor super matches.

Its also my first try with the 7MMs. I have been a big fan of the 6.5s and have shot the 260s and 6.5x55s and 6.5x284s for years and love them. The 284 looked to be a great compermise with accuracy and barrel life for my long range work. I am currently using a 6.5x55 trying to get better barrel life than my 6.5x284s.

I was at the 1500yd Match at Coonabarabran which Laurie mentioned. Even some of the 308s were getting respectable scores in Match rifle.
In F class, the first few places at least were with 7mms pushed at around 2830 fps and a 6.5x284 pushed fairly hard. They were still getting good scores with these set ups condidering the winds and that they used an 800 yd target. This was with their regular competition F Open rifles.
Now that the match will be going back to 1 mile, some are talking of 7mm SAUMs and WSMs, but the serious shooters are not looking at anything bigger than this.

People

We were using March 10x60x52 tactical with 60moa of elevation, I had a 20 MOA base and ran out of elevation past the 1500 yrd mark,(100 yrd zero) after that I used the MTR 1 reticle which had moa graduation. My fellow shooter had the same scope with 30 moa base and was ok to around 1700 yards.
My suggestion would be use your existing setup to get a 100yrd zero then record it on the turret and wind back to see how
many moa you used for 100yrds, take this away from your base and scope moa gives you what you have available, if not enough (according to your ballistics program then get your rail machined to what you need, then you can still use a short range zero.
Not forget you can use your reticle if it has moa or mil hold points.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Gary

"Great post" I was thinking of building another 7stw( use a 7stw for hunting,26"Kreiger .640 at muzzle) for longrange( 1K).I,m ret so looks like a 284Win w162 amax or 180 berger hy. may be my best choice (shooting steel).~Danny

Once again, there is no free lunch. If you use the big magnums you can get the velocity but the barrel life is very short and the recoil is harsh.

Another thing to look at is the accuracy node of your bullet. Even though you can push the 180s to 3200fps they may not like being pushed that hard. So a lot depends on the combination.

I could push the 142s to over 3000fps out of my 6.5x284 but the accuracy node was in the 2950 to 2975 range and that was more important to me than the velocity.

If its a pure hunting rifle then barrel life is not a major concern if you shoot no more than a box a shells a year. However if you want it more for long range shooting you will probably be shooting a barrel out in a summer. I guess your choice will depend on your shooting requirments.

Something to think about would be what speed do these bullets blow apart at? My brother in law has used a 7mm WSM , and he was getting a few 180s to blow apart from rotational speeds in his barrel, which I think was an 8.5" twist.
Has anyone else had this happen when pushing the big bullets to fast?

I have blown up thin jacket 180s bullets at 2900 fps in an 8.5 twist barrel but I have not blown up any of the thick jacket bullets including some that I ran up to 3100 fps+ although not in that barrel.
