7mm STW VS 7mm Ultra mag

Not to start a war but short necked cartridges do not cause inaccuracy. To name a few, the 300 win mag, 300 RUM, 300 WSM, 6.5-284 and 284 win do just fine.

I built a 7mm/375 Ruger by simply necking down the 375 Ruger and it has a short neck. I actually built three and all shot the 180s just fine.

Now if one wants to argue that short necks erode the throats faster that has been proven to be true.

There is no argument, the cartridges with the longer necks have the reputation for the best accuracy! Starting with one of the oldest cases the 30/06 and all it's offspring, the 25/06, the 6.5/06, the 270, the 280, and the 35 Whelan. Other great performers with necks longer than .280", the 222, 222mag, 6X47(222 mag necked to 6mm), the 20 BR, the 22 BR, the 6BR, the 7BR, the 6PPC , the 20PPC, the 22PPC, the 6.5X47 Lapua, the 6X47 Lapua, the 338 Lapua. All of these cartridges have one thing in common , they have set world records in Benchrest short and long range, as well as many other diciplines!

Thought I would jump in and revive this thread.

I own a few 7mm's including 7-08, 7-08 Ackley, 7rm, 7stw and 7rum. In my opinion the 7rum is a waste of time with any bullet lighter than 175. With the case capacity you are wasting powder shooting light bullets. With the heavier bullets it really shines. The stw is best with 154 and up. I did shoot 140 X bullets at 3425 fps and it was a awesome elk round but it is still better with heavier bullets.

Which is my favorite? They all have a niche that they fill so it is hard to say.

I personally love the 7mm STW. My load is 77 gr of IMR 7878 SC with the Swift 150 Scirocco Bullet, Federal Mag Rifle primer and Remington Brass. The load is quite accurate and chrono's around 3300 fps. I have had this rifle for 24 years and only put a new barrel on two years ago. I think I was tough on the first barrel by always trying for 3500 with 140 bullets, once I gave that up, wear decreased significantly. The first barrel was a Douglass and the new barrel is a Bartlin (sp). I log most of my shots and the first barrel started shooting groups above 1" at just about 900 rounds. The new load in the new barrel is showing very little wear after a couple of hundred rounds.

I played with the Ultra Mag for a little bit, it seemed to be a little particular on loads and was not as accurate as the STW. I have heard of others with better results. You cannot go wrong either way. Good luck.

First off the STW is not even close to the speed of a 7RUM. Second just because you have a very large case doesn't mean you need to run a max load. How ever when I had my 7 RUM chambered I sent 2 blanks to the smith. Same brand, same reamer, made the same day, lapped by the same guy (I think). The 7 RUM is the way to go if you want performance you just have to be ready to pay the price, if it really isn't that important (performance) build A 7 remmag.

7mm stw as a barrel burner is a bit over rated. If your intentions are to use it for shooting matches and shoot 60 rounds each week, you probably should look elsewhere. If it's your hunting and occasional target choice, you'll get along just fine. I have two in this caliber, both give excellent accuracy. Granted, after many rounds through both, chasing lands has allowed them to maintain sub-moa accuracy. BTY, they get along just fine with a couple 7mm RM I also enjoy hunting with. Belts have not once been an issue and I don't understand the complaints.

The Dasher has a short neck..and is now the go to cartridge for everything target 600 yards and further. Neck length...not that important.

As far as the OP...the bigest 7 I have is a 7mmRem Mag, but ..if I was going to build another ultra-LR hunting stick...it would either be a 7 Rum or something on a 338 Lapua case. I already have a 338 Edge for this task, but the BIG 7's would be as good, if not better with the fabeled 195 Bergers for deer sized game.
