7mm, something in-between WSM and 28 Nosler

I seem to be drawn to the children of the 404 Jeffrey case. I'd like a bit power than the WSM but not so much of a barrel-burner like the 28 Nosler. I'm guessing about 75 grains of case capacity. If there is something halfway between those two that I'm just seeing, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

Sounds like you want a 7 Dakota. The large bolt face is a pain but I really like the case.

I've heard that before, but I haven't heard good things about Dakota. I've also been referred to Gunwerks 7mm LRM, based on the 375 Ruger, but I'm not sure if people are building rifles with it or if it's proprietary.

The Dakota does have its drawbacks, but I have a 700 chambered in 7 Dakota and have been impressed thus far. It was a proprietary cartridge, but reamers can be had. 175 gr bullets at 3120fps and accurate. The cons are the large boltface, and brass can be tough to find at times.

I would not go to a proprietary case like the Dakota or the Lazzeroni. Brass might become somewhat of a pain to get. I know you are looking for something based on the 404 Jeffrey case>>> a great case to be sure. However, your looking at about 75 grains? Well, if it were me, I would be doing the "plain old 7mm Rem Mag" or if you wanted some more zip, a 7mm STW (Shooting Times Westerner) would also fill your bill. The 7 STW brass can be made from several sources, so it will always be easy to come by. Some food for thought..

You would like a bit more power (powder) than the WSM?

The 7mm WSM has a case capacity of approximately 82 grains of H2O.

'but not so much of a barrel-burner like the 28 Nosler.'

Like the .264 Win. Mag. of yesteryear, the 26, 28 Nosler can lose that moniker of 'barrel burner' by learning how to use cooler burning powders in the proper combination with your selection of bullets.

If you're looking for a case capacity of somewhere between 82 grains and approximately 100 grains then you can look at the .300 Win Mag. necked down to 7mm at 93 grains or the European 7 x 66 SE vom Hofe at 93grains also. These cases are available through Huntington's made by Horneber. Pricey but the very best brass like RWS from Europe. Or you could make it from Nosler RUM brass with the standardized rim diameter. Buy some of their 'blemish' stock and save a few dollars.

The 7mm BooBoo is the 6.5mm or 8mm x 68S case blown out and improved by Dave Tooley. These run about 91 grains of capacity.

Regards.

7STW has a case capacity of around 98 grains depending on make. The 7 Dakota is a very nice chambering and is easy to load for and very accurate but I think the case capacity is around 90 grains. You might want to look at the 7-300WM / 7mm Practical. Not sure of the case capacity but I think its less than the 7 Dakota.

I have a design for you. I can't upload pics and specs from my tablet so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

I shortened the 28 Nosler amout the same amount the Nosler was shortened from the RUM.

I haven't built it yet. Still needs a long action but its what you are asking about.

I've got several 7mm Dakotas. Great cartridge. Powder capacity is the same as the 7-300 win mag. I make my Dakota brass from 404 Jeffrey. STW would be easier, but brass isn't really available for it either. If I had it to do over I'd probably build a 7-300 and use rws brass.

:):)

But the original poster was talking about 404/RUM/Nosler/WSM type cartridges.
When the OP sees the price tag for that wild cat:

finish reamer
die reamer
custom dies
he may have to change his drawers!
not to mention most gunsmiths want to fire one or two test rounds in the new barrel before they send it off to the customer

Alex Wheeler could put you on 3 barrels in 28 nosler for the same cost of a shortened 404/RUM/WSM case...look before you leap.

I get my computer back later and will post the spec.

Might even try to form a case and put picture of a 6.5/300 WSM, 6.5 Coaster and 26 Nosler.

The 7mm RSAUM has about 74 grains capacity, and a longer neck than the WSM. Too bad that it is suffering in popularity and sourcing brass would likely be an issue.
