7mm Short Ackley Mag

G'day,

I am looking for something a little different to push the 7mm 180 berger at 3000fps and the 168 at 3100fps.

I have been searching the web and found a image on this website about a 30cal short ackley mag based on the 338wm, which has spiked my interest.

I am after any info regarding this round and if anyone had done one in 7mm.

Cheers
Michael

What kind of speed does this expensive wildcat do compared to a 300 win mag used as a comparison.

You can do it with a 7 WSM, 7-300 WSM and almost with the 7 SAUM

The images Ackley provides in his Handbook for either .30 short Magnum No. 1 (Ackley) or No. 2 (Ackley) do not have a shoulder angle that matches the photo in that article. That is, the angle shown in his Handbook look closer to 25 to 30 degrees.

With respect to his 7mm Ackley Magnum, he stated his goal was to shorten a .300 H&H case so that it would hold slightly less than 70 gr. of powder and noted that it was just the .270 Ackley Magnum necked up to 7mm. He goes on to describe it as "quite similar" to the 7mm Remington Magnum when providing data and commentary on the 7mm Remington Magnum. Finally, I believe the 7mm Remington Magnum is really just a .338 Winchester Magnum necked down to 7mm and, accordingly, should be (as Ackley stated) almost identical to Ackley's 7mm Magnum

A 7mm saum will push a 180 at 3000 no problems at all from a 30" barrel. You can get 3050 with a decent action without too much drama using h1000. If you want something a little different have a look at a 7mm- 300wsm. Slightly more capacity than the saum but not as over bore as a rem mag or even a straight 7wsm.

I know this is an Old Thread but I was just posting about this Cartridge. I'm assuming this is the 7mm Ackley Magnum where you take a 7mm Remington Magnum Barrel, and cut Three Threads off and Ream it with an Improved Shoulder. With this Version you take 7mm Rem Mag Brass and form it through a Full length Sizing die thereby Lengthening the Neck and obtaining a much more Efficient shoulder. Kinda like a Poor Mans Weatherby. Has anyone else knowledge of this?

Used to have a couple 7saum's

Running 31" barrels and RL 22 and MRP I was shooting 168's at over 3100 with no problems at all. And shooting 180's right at 3000.
