7mm saum Ackley improved

Ready to build a new 7mm I have a 34 inch fluted 1 n 9 twist Hart ready to be chambered. Im looking for a bug holer to reach out to 1000+

Looks like you've got it . Might contact Jim Murphy at (270)316-9378 for chambering? But, please understand what you are getting yourself into in this era of scarce reloading supplies...those cases will have to be fire-formed :-\... :'(, which will chew up your precious powder and primers...hopefully you will have some scrap bullets to use...maybe scrap powder, too. Also, unless you just happen to chamber a separate 7 RSAUM AI chamber in a worn out 7mm barrel for fire-forming, there goes your good barrel's life for fire-forming. (I did not find them to be very accurate until they were fire-formed in the AI chamber, either. So don't necessarily think that you will just fire-form at the match?)

Might I suggest getting a hydraulic forming die from Hornady. I got one for my .280 as I use LC Match .30-06 brass. Expensive and takes awhile to get, but you don't have to waste components to fire form and VERY simple to use.

I can tell you that a 120 grain Ballistic at just over 3500 FPS with unglue a groundhog when shot out of my 31" 7mm SAUM AI.......
For the amount of jump they sure shoot good....
The 162 Amax did a great job also, but not the "tears them up" that the 120's do....
As far as fireforming goes I've never seen it as a problem accuracy wise, because it still kills em pretty darn quick...

All good info, I found 5 boxes of loaded Remington at my gun shop the other day. Due to the trouble getting saum brass do u think I should go with another 284, perhaps a 7 mag or 280 AI?

100 rounds will last you a long time, unless your hot rodding them really hard..
The Remington factory brass is available a few times a year, so back order some and have right at it.
I for one will never be without a 7MM SAUM, Ackley or not..........

I like what I've read and all the comments....7 saum it is. I have a 34" 1.25 fluted tube im gonna have it chambered and leave it as long as possible. Bat action and russo stock and I hope I can afford a nightforce to top it off. It ought to be good shooter...I like ragged one hole groups!!

I have had good service out of the 7mm rsaum .with brass being hard to get almost unobtainable I would not start a rsaum project until brass became readily available.i don't see needing an AI improved version

I have several AI Guns The RSUM is a good case and AI ed It would be even better , The cool thing with the AI is improved case life and less bolt thrust = greater performance . that is my 2 cents DD Build it

Talked to Bill today about the 284 Shehane...I read where guys are getting better or equal velocity as the saum with 10 grains less powder and as I have a 6x284 alreadyi have 400 new cases....maybe im changing my mind!

Waaayyy-back-when I did a water-weight check, I found the Remington 7mm RSAUM (7mm RSAUM) case to be 74.02 grains in capacity; and, 76.87 grains after improved.

out of interest how much capacity is lost if you neck down and neck turn the norma 300 saum brass. I read somewhere that the 300 norm asaum brass is slightly thicker and less cacpacity than the rem? I have also noticed big weight variations between batches of rem saum brass as much as 15 grains

My opinion is go straight .284 and if you want a little more power go up to the 7SAUM. I don't see the benifit of going up to the AI version when the original is so nice and works so well. but hell sometimes just being different is it's own reward.

The Norma .300 SAUM measured 75.24 grains before and 76.10 grains afterward. Trouble with the SAUM case is that one has to hold the bullets in with scotch tape :-\ after improving.
