7mm Rem Mag

My question is, would the 7mm mag be a decent 1000 yd, gun? If so how about the Mod,70 action. Reason being, I own a 7mag in m-70 and would like to start learning 1000yd shooting, would it be feasable to build a 1000yd gun out of this action just to start on? Thanks Andy

There's no reason why the 7 Mag in a M70 can't be a very competitive starter rifle and cartridge for 1000,and 600) yard competition. Once you get hooked you will no doubt want to upgrade but the best way to find out what you want in the way of equipment is to enter a few tournaments and shoot. Years ago the 7mm Mag was a popular long range cartridge but has lost it's glitter to the new chic cartridges. The same for the likes of the 300 WM and 300 Wby. But the 7mm is a winning caliber. Pick the highest BC bullet that is compatible with the twist of your barrel and shoot it fast enough to be supersonic at the longest distance you want to shoot. A good scope with at least a 20 to 24 power setting is almost required as is a suitable front and rear rest setup. Find a club that shoots in your area and go to a match. You will get more advice and help than you ever wanted.

Yes, the 7mm Rem mag can get it done at 1000 yards. Believe it was only a few years ago it made another big victory in 1000 yard benchrest competition. The newer 175 & 180 grain match bullets coupled with slow burning powder and a quality barrel will do the trick.

Grt the 175gr Siera and try Retumbo and H1000 and you will have a combination that will work at 1000 even in the factory barrel to get you started.
