7mm PRC -- New SAAMI Cartridge

It is finally here, accepted by SAAMI and soon to be Hornady's next hot cartridge. It appears to be a long action cartridge designed on the shorter end to leave plenty of space for long, high-BC bullets. Its said to get 2950 fps with 180 gr bullets. It seems to be a similar design with a length between the two PRC cartridges that are already out there. This could be quite the "Goldilocks" 7mm magnum cartridge. Video out on "Impact Dynamics" and "Backfire TV" you youtube.

This looks promising.

I hope that’s 2950 with 180’s out a fairly short barrel because numerous short action magnum 7mm can do that speed with 28” and sometimes 26”.

I don't know. The only two short magnums that have any relevance have pretty limited loads. I couldn't find any WSM or SAUM loads with 180s. The WSM showed 3000 for a 160 gr and the SAUM showed 2950. Perhaps that can be reached handloading, but I'm also sure one could handload this new round over factory velocity, too.

Based on the specs, I strongly suspect these velocities would be obtained out of a 24" barrel. Given this has a case capacity greater than a 7SAUM, I'd be surprised if it takes off in F-class given how quickly the barrel would burn out. With similar case capacity to the 300WSM, that usually results in barrel burn out around the 800 round mark when necked down to 7mm, hence why the 7SAUM has gained more of a following in the F-class world.

I'm not sure that it was ever really intended for F-class, but it does seem to be targeted at hunting and long range shooting. Looking at the case length, bullets like the 195 gr EOL look like they would easily fit a repeater's magazine.

Why such a long leade?

I think the second sentence in the original post explains it.

As a bonus you'll find out you need to get an Alex Wheeler AW2 reamer to fix your horrible extraction issues...just like all the other PRC cartridges.

But wait, you'll have to use Hornady brass for a few years until someone else makes it.

Yawn…. Unless someone makes good brass for it. I guess the hunter people will have a new creedmore to make wild claims about. You can’t find saum or wsm data??

Hornady can market, I’ll say that!!

I didn't say anything about finding data, I mentioned the factory loads. Just as you can hotrod a WSM, you'll be able to hot rod this. Did you happen to watch the video that went through water weight capacity of the cartridges already out there?

Must’ve missed the video.

Thanks. Long throat and leade make sense for that.
Lighter and shorter bullets may be more of a problem.

This was a screen grab comparing factory loads for the similar rounds. For some reason it didn't show WSM (from the lawsuit maybe?) but my ballistic app doesn't show any 180 gr WSM loads commercially available.

Cant wait to build a custom rifle so I can only use Hornady brass...

What is this extraction issue fix you speak of? Asking for a friend

This isn’t a custom, but a factory hunting rifle with a pencil barrel combined with component shortage, so three round groups. Seems to work well with Hornady brass. It isn’t my preference, but I have ADG for my long range hunting rifle.
