7mm Practical Info

Hello everyone. This is my first post on the forum (long time lurker). I’m currently in the middle of a build and have been debating on chambering a barrel in 7mm Practical.

This is going to be a dedicated long range rig. I’m not very concerned with “Just build it in 7mm Rem mag”. I want to do something a little different, I like the 7mm bore size, and I have plenty of 300 win mag brass.

I basically am just curious to hear if anybody has any experience with this cartridge, pros, cons, and general thoughts. Anything is appreciated!

The practical requires fire forming. I do not feel it's worth it. You will get nothing, in my opinion, over a straight 7-300. If you are stuck on the 300 WM case I would do a straight 7-300. My 2 28" 7-300 barrels were pushing 180 hybrids at 3165 with H1000 well under any pressure signs.

Thanks for the input, that is most likely what I will end up doing. I’d prefer to stick with the 300 wm case. Makes my life easier.

I’m not crazy about spending the extra time fire forming, and those results sound very satisfactory. A sure step up from my 284 win.

How much velocity gain would you expect out of a 30” barrel vs the 28”?

My reamer print is on file at PTG. I just necked down 300 brass with Redding bushing dies and loaded and shot. Pretty simple.

That sounds perfect for me. Do you happen to have the reamer print #?

41753. It was throated for 180 Hybrids which have a short bearing surface. If you plan to shoot other bullets I would add some freebore.

That’s for the heads up. I tentatively plan on running the 183 Smks. I’ve had very good results with the 175 smks. I plan on doing the work myself, so I can be flexible with my plans.

Look up Nathan Fosters development of the 7mm practical. He has developed and tested it exhaustively. Best 7mm out there I think. my next rebarrel will be for this cartridge.

I'am shooting the straight 7x300 getting 3100fps , can't push the win. brass any harder with 76.o gr. h-1000 primer pockets won't hold up,shooting a 28" shilen barrel,using the berger 180 vld hunting bullet, just picked up some adg brass i think with this i could bring velocity up a little more. this is also my first post, also have been a lurker for too long. the barrel has .220 freebore.
