7mm long range bbl quandry

Hammer47

I suffer fools poorly.
Have this beautiful 7mm Krieger 1.5 no taper 30 inch blank just snoozin' in the shop. Would like to make a great long range rifle from it. What would be your vote in chambering? It is a 9 twist. I am thinking 284 but are there any better choices?

Must be meant to be, something kept nagging me about the 284 and went on a tool box dive and came up with a brand new PTG 284 Match reamer with a zero freebore............wow. Must have had that reamer for 20 years and totally forgot about it. Also stumbled upon a new 7 IHMSA reamer too.............decisions.o_O

Just check the reamer base dia as the Lapua based brass should be around 0.499-0.500 and the Winchester based reamers were around 0.497.
If it were me I'd go a 7mmSAUM, better brass and you can always down load to 284.

You really need to research the 7 SAUM. It is very accurate, easy to load for, brass is exceptional. For competition (the barrel you have suggests that's what you're looking at) you could NOT do better than a SAUM. With a 9 twist you can make the 180 Hybrids scream out of there!

"0" freebore? No heavy bullets for you. Is that short for .100? Most use @.120 freebore.

So, here goes my credibility down the drain but FWIW, I just attended a gunsmith school by a very well known long range shooting gunsmith and the talk was that one of his former students personally made a 7mmRSAUM with .340 freebore Bartlein 1-9 and shot a 2" (yes, 2 inch) group at 1000 yards using Berger 195's. We saw the pictures, incredible.... The event was not officially sanctioned so it was not considered a world record.

I am in the process of building an 7SAUM with those dimensions and a 338LM.

YMMV (Your mileage may vary)

On a minimum spec 7mm reamer shooting VLD's the FB is usually around .060" depending on bullet length and seating depth. My 7mm RUM reamer was a .063" with a 180 Berger VLD seated 3.73"ish OAL.

I was wrong, the 'standard' FB for many F-Class .284 Win. shooters is @.218 not .120.
